Church and village history, varied walking routes and local produce give Sainte-Gemmes-d'Andigné a distinct cultural focus. When planning your stay, you can combine these themes or focus on one of them.
Churches, Chapels and Distinctive Architecture
The Church of Sainte-Gemmes has been listed as a Monument historique since 6 February 2014. The cemetery chapel is another place to admire the architecture. It has an octagonal floor plan, topped by a domed roof with a lantern. The chapel was restored in 1989. It may date back to the 17th century and was partially rebuilt in the 19th century.
The seigneurial chapel at the Château de la Blanchaie was founded in 1536 and is dedicated to Saint Claude. Inside is a limestone altarpiece depicting the Crucifixion. The château is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check access arrangements in advance.
A fountain adds another architectural feature: it is built of tuff stone and has a triangular pediment topped by a cross. A small niche still houses a statue of the Virgin Mary. The fountain may date from the 18th century.
Village History and Historic Estates
The village of Saintes-Gemmes developed from the 12th century onward around the former priory church. The Château de la Blanchaie is documented from the 15th century. The Moulin de l'Homme also has a connection to the history of the monastery: it was formerly an outbuilding of the Priory of Saint-Gemmes-d'Andigné. The present watermill appears to have been built in the 18th century and extended in the 19th century. These dates trace the village's development, the earliest record of the château and the mill's presumed construction history.
The Demeure de la Haute Rivière is a historic château in Sainte-Gemmes-d'Andigné and is considered a former seigneurie dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. One of the owners accompanies visitors exploring the Demeure; arrange your visit in advance.
Trails and Local Produce for Planning Your Stay
There are two different ways to plan your route. The Voie verte, which runs through Sainte-Gemmes-d'Andigné, connects Segré and Pouancé. The Circuit de Sainte-Gemmes-d'Andigné takes you along the commune's lanes and paths. The Voie verte therefore focuses on the link between Segré and Pouancé, while the Circuit follows local lanes and paths.
The produce from Ferme de la Fouardière also offers a tangible connection to the area. The farm produces milk, butter, fresh cheese and Lotier, a tomme cheese typical of the Segré area. On Friday evenings, Ferme de la Fouardière is represented at the farmers' market in Sainte-Gemmes-d'Andigné. The Verger de l'Epinay also sells its produce there on Friday evenings. As market arrangements can change, check the date in advance. Product availability can also vary; if interested, ask what is on offer.
Ferme de la Fouardière offers educational and guided visits for groups. Arrange the date and visit details in advance. Group visits and the farmers' market are different ways to learn about local production: the visits are for groups, while the market offers produce for sale.
Arrange market dates and visits to Ferme de la Fouardière and the Demeure de la Haute Rivière separately.
