Riverside, trails and a realistic time budget
The banks of the Moine are part of Saint-Crespin-Sur-Moine’s natural heritage. Two walking loops start and end in the village, giving your stay a clear focus: experience the landscape on foot and discover individual cultural sites. The stated difficulty levels are the same for both routes; their lengths and durations, however, differ. You can take the time available into account when planning.
Comparing the two walking loops
The Serpillette trail is a moderately difficult 9.5-kilometre loop, with a stated duration of 2.5 hours. It starts and ends in Saint-Crespin-Sur-Moine and passes through vineyards, fields and woodland paths. Along the way, the route passes by Château de Beauchêne. The loop thus combines several landscape features with a historic building along the same route.
La Pierre de l’Écuelle is also a moderately difficult walking loop, but at 11.5 kilometres it is longer; the stated duration is 3.5 hours. This loop also starts and ends in Saint-Crespin-Sur-Moine. The direct comparison shows a difference of two kilometres and one hour. Both routes have the same stated difficulty level. When weighing up how much time to allow for the walk, you can therefore focus mainly on these specific differences.
Legend and historical traces
La Pierre de l’Écuelle is an impressive rock formation and is at the heart of a local legend about the fairy Mélusine. The name also appears in the name of the walking loop. At Chapelle des Écluseaux, another aspect of the region’s heritage leads into history: the chapel dates from the late 12th and early 13th centuries. A polychrome stone Pietà in the chapel bears traces of gunshots from the Revolutionary period; Christ’s feet were reconstructed in wood.
The Maison du Mineur et des Énergies is housed in a former mine supervisor’s home, built in 1954. The house’s former function and its year of construction give the site a different historical connection from the medieval chapel. For a village walk, a visitor app following the Scénovision at the Maison provides seven audio stations. They are available in French only. Check whether the app is available before planning your visit.
Breaks along the trail and in the botanical area
There are picnic tables and a fishing platform along the La Pierre de l’Écuelle walking loop. Another picnic area is located in the Espace botanique de Bikini Bellevue; it is shaded. Conditions in this area may vary seasonally.
Wine and horse-riding experiences and where they are based
For a wine tasting, Domaine de la Colline offers a vineyard visit followed by a tasting. The domaine is located in Sèvremoine. Vignes en Selle is based in the wider Nantes wine-growing area and offers riding lessons, trail rides and introductions to pony riding. The rides pass between vineyards and along a river. These activities complement the local trails and cultural sites with distinct wine and horse-riding experiences; their stated locations remain different.
