Juigné-Sur-Loire offers two distinct ways to spend your stay: exploring architectural and local history, or enjoying nature in Parc des Garennes. At Église Saint Germain, you can distinguish building phases dating from the 9th to the early 13th century; the mills tell a later story of construction, closure and restoration. The park focuses on habitats and wildlife. Plan your days around your interests, and you have a clear choice between architectural history and exploring nature.

Church and local history

Église Saint Germain was built between 1050 and 1120 in the Romanesque Plantagenet style. It was erected on the foundations of a barn-shaped church dating from the 9th century. The choir was also built in the Plantagenet style, in the early 13th century. The vault keystones and capitals are finely carved, and several statues on the corbels have survived to this day. This means that different periods of construction can be seen side by side in the same building. The church is open to visitors daily; check locally before your visit to confirm opening hours.

Another local landmark with a historical connection is the Maison de naissance Jacques Genest. The two-storey house is in Juigné-Sur-Loire; Jacques Genest dit Labarre was born there on 17 April 1640. At Maison forte du Plessis de Juigné, by contrast, the focus is on its location: its elevated position made it possible to control the valleys of the Loire, Aubance and Louet. The birthplace and the fortified manor thus point to different aspects of local history—a specific biography and the importance of the valley location.

Mills built at different times

At Les Deux Moulins, the Moulins de la Masse Rutault complex comprises one mill dating from the 17th century and another built in 1838. The later mill has a further documented history: it was decommissioned in 1909 and restored in 2000. The two mills represent different periods of construction; for the mill built in 1838, the end of operations and its later restoration are also part of its story. The mills add another chapter of architectural history to the story of the church, though the two structures do not date from the same period.

Parc des Garennes: habitats and nature

Part of Parc des Garennes is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Val de Loire. Visitors can follow the paths to discover a mosaic of different habitats in a protected natural landscape. The area's rocky outcrops are also home to Gagée de Bohème, a yellow-flowering plant in the lily family. The park therefore offers both a view of the landscape and specific insights into its plant life. Maison du Parc is a building dedicated to Parc des Garennes and welcomes visitors interested in nature. Check local visitor information before your trip.

Guided and waymarked discoveries

The Au Phil du Parc guided tour offers walks featuring anecdotes about the habitats and wildlife of Parc des Garennes. Tours are available on weekdays throughout the year; check the date and reservation requirements before your visit. Another way to explore nature is En’Quête de plantes, an app-based Baludik activity aimed at families. Check in advance whether the activity is currently available. The two formats offer different experiences: one features guided walks with anecdotes, while the other is an app-based exploration for families.

The waymarked Parcours Loire et Vieux Hameaux route can be explored on foot or by bike. It passes through Juigné-Sur-Loire's ligurian and wine-growing landscapes. Among the sights along the route are the Martigneau vineyards, Parc Intercommunal des Garennes and the manor house Le Chaillou Blanc. The route thus covers more than nature: wine-growing and a manor house are also among the things to discover. If you prefer a guided nature experience, Au Phil du Parc offers a different way to explore than the waymarked route; families can also choose the app-based plant activity.

When planning your visit, it helps to decide first what interests you most: church architecture, the history of the mills or nature in Parc des Garennes. The experiences also differ in format, from the church, which is open daily, to guided walks and a waymarked route for pedestrians and cyclists. This lets you choose according to the subjects you would like to explore during your stay.
