Gesté offers several practical ways to plan your trip: architectural history at Château du Plessis, archaeological traces at Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens, walking trails and horse-riding activities. The trails vary in length, surroundings and route; the horse-riding activities come in different formats. This allows you to tailor the focus of your stay to the options available.
Architectural History and Historical Traces
Château du Plessis in Gesté is classified as both a manor house and a fortified castle. Its main construction phases span the second half of the 15th century, the first half of the 16th century and the 19th century. The classification identifies two architectural designations; the building phases extend across several centuries.
Gesté d’Autrefois is presented on three panels: two display numbered photographs, and a numbered map links locations to the photographs. The numbering matches each image to its location, making the material readable as a coherent presentation.
Another historical perspective is offered by the site of the Church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens and its cemetery. It bears witness to more than twelve centuries of history. A September 2025 article reports on excavations carried out before the site was rebuilt: a succession of structures and nearly 1,200 years of burials were uncovered, including Merovingian sarcophagi. The site’s architectural development and long history of burials therefore represent distinct aspects of the same place.
Walking Trails with Different Profiles
The Coulée Verte walking trail is 2.5 km long, easy, and designed to take 45 minutes. It starts at Place des peupliers and runs between homes and the Sanguèze, passing ponds, pastures, wet meadows and former washhouses. This described route combines specific distance and time details with water, open landscape features and a link to everyday history.
The Le Petit Moulin circular trail has a different focus: it follows the canal of the small Sanguèze river through the centre of Gesté. The Sanguèze is crossed via a small bridge or at a ford. While the Coulée Verte is distinguished by its walking time and landscape features, Le Petit Moulin is defined by its central canal-side route and river crossing.
If you would like a clearly stated walking time to guide your choice of trail, the Coulée Verte offers a useful reference at 45 minutes. Le Petit Moulin, by contrast, is best described by its route through the town centre and the crossing by bridge or ford.
Running and Horse-Riding Activities
The 16-hectare Étang de La Thévinière offers a natural, unspoilt setting for running. This makes running a distinct activity alongside the circular walking trails described above. Your choice may depend on whether you are looking for a clearly defined walking route or a place to run.
L’Étrier Gestois offers weekly group lessons by ability level for children aged six and over. Courses are available during school holidays, and guided pony rides can be arranged on request. The activities therefore vary in schedule and format: regular group lessons, holiday courses or a pony ride on request.
L’Étrier Gestois’s facilities include three riding arenas, a dressage arena, an indoor riding arena and a stable. There are also tree-lined areas for horses, ponies and riders. These details complement the different course and lesson formats with a concrete picture of the available riding facilities.
