Corné brings together a distinctive architectural history and opportunities for walks along the Authion. Saint-Blaise Church dates from the 11th century; its richly decorated Flamboyant Gothic portal is dated to around 1450. It also features late Gothic star vaults, which are considered rare in Anjou. The landscape is shaped by woodland and river: Corné is bordered by woodland on one side and the Authion on the other. The town is also located within the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park.

Landscape and nature around Corné

Woodlands lie north of Corné, while the Authion lies to the south; both offer opportunities for walks. This lets you choose a walk to suit the landscape: woodland or the river environment. In addition, since 2024 the Pré des Ilons in Corné has been part of the Marais et Bocage de l’Authion nature reserve. The area is open to the public. This means that a general choice between woodland and the Authion sits alongside a specific, named nature reserve as distinct ways to experience nature.

A walk or a sporting activity

One specific route option is the “Entre rivière et forêt” circular trail. It follows the Authion, passes the Corné bridge and then continues along a shaded riverside path with small locks. The sequence of river, bridge and riverside path provides clearly identifiable landscape features along the route; the locks add another distinctive detail.

Corné also has a signposted fitness trail that combines walking with sporting activities. The choice between the two options depends on what you are looking for: the circular trail focuses on the Authion and riverside features, while the fitness trail combines walking and exercise. Both offer different ways to enjoy physical activity in the town.

The architectural history of Saint-Blaise Church

Several different historical periods can be distinguished at Saint-Blaise Church. The church dates from the 11th century, while its richly decorated Flamboyant Gothic portal dates from around 1450. The term describes the portal’s style; the date indicates its approximate period of construction. The star vaults belong to the Late Gothic period and are considered rare in Anjou. The term “star vault” refers to the star-shaped arrangement of the ribs in the vault structure.

November 8, 1972, marks a different event: on that day, Saint-Blaise was added to France’s supplementary list of historic monuments. The church’s date of origin, its portal and vaults, and its heritage protection date are therefore distinct historical reference points. Together, they offer several ways to explore Corné’s architectural history.

Corné for your travel plans

The “Entre rivière et forêt” circular trail adds another landscape perspective, taking in the bridge, the shaded riverside path and the small locks. If you would like to include both themes in your travel plans, you can consider Corné’s ecclesiastical heritage and its walking opportunities as separate points of interest.
