Cheviré-le-Rouge brings together forest landscapes, hiking trails and a rich ecclesiastical heritage. The village lies between the forests of Baugé and Chambiers, in a hilly landscape dotted with châteaux and manor houses. This gives you several different options to consider when planning your visit: a short forest walk, circular routes with different stated durations, and the architecture and organ history of Saint-Médard. A fishing pond with a picnic area and an introduction to Boule de Fort round out the picture of the village.

Hikes Between Forest and Hilly Countryside

The very easy “La Roche Hue” hike starts in Cheviré-le-Rouge and covers 8 km through the forests, taking 2 hours 15 minutes. For a short forest walk, consider Bois de la Roche Hue. Of the two forest options, La Roche Hue is a hike with a specified duration, while the Bois is a short walking option. The “Le Hameau du Pont” circular route offers a different landscape: it runs through hilly countryside and forests dotted with châteaux and small churches in the Romanesque style and Angevin Gothic. At 17.6 km and 4 hours 25 minutes, it is considerably longer and takes more time than La Roche Hue. You can therefore take both the duration and the type of landscape into account when choosing. Trail conditions may change after severe storms; check them before setting out.

Saint-Médard: Architecture, Organ and Museum

Several aspects of church history come together at Saint-Médard. The church dates from the 11th, 13th and 19th centuries; its distinctive choir is an example of Angevin Gothic in the Plantagenet style. The organ adds a musical dimension to the architectural story: Ludwig Bonn built it in 1865, and Louis Debierre modified it in 1876. As an instrument, it is a characteristic transitional type between the Classical and Romantic periods. The timelines of the church and organ differ: the church has dates from three centuries, while eleven years separate the organ’s construction and modification.

The Musée Art Sacré et Métiers d’Art is housed on the ground floor of the bell tower and contains a collection of 200 liturgical vestments and ecclesiastical objects. The site thus brings together architectural history, musical context, and a specific collection of sacred textiles and objects—three different ways to explore its ecclesiastical heritage.

Pond, Boule de Fort and Pilgrim Route

There is a fishing pond at the Plan d’eau de Cheviré-le-Rouge, which also has a picnic area. If fishing is part of your plans, check the local requirements for a fishing permit. The picnic area also offers a place to take a break. The La Fraternité society welcomes visitors who would like an introduction to the traditional game of Boule de Fort. Check the arrangements for visits before you travel. Cheviré-le-Rouge is also a stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. This connection with pilgrimage adds another perspective on the village alongside its landscape and cultural attractions.
