Châtelais can be explored through visible remains of its fortifications, archaeological finds and a longer circular trail. Remains of the fortifications can be seen at three locations in the village; the Circuit de Châtelais also starts in Châtelais and follows paths through varied landscapes and natural habitats. This offers different options for your stay: cultural history through buildings and collection pieces, or a hike lasting several hours.

Fortifications and artwork

On the western side of the fortification remains stands the Porte Guerchoise, a rectangular gate tower. Its location and design place this named structure within the fortifications. The Porte Guerchoise was protected as a historic monument by decree on 9 December 1964. This makes the fortifications tangible not only as a whole, but also through a specifically named structure. Those interested in the village’s architectural history will find a clear point of reference here.

Another form of heritage can be found in the Church of Saint-Pierre: in the north transept is the Vierge de Pitié, a sculpture made of soft limestone. The CAOA dates the work to the 16th century. Unlike the fortification remains, this is a single figurative work in a particular part of the church. The building and sculpture thus offer two different perspectives on local heritage.

Archaeological finds and local history

The Musée archéologique - Châtelais presents local history from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. On display are worked stones found in the surrounding area, flints, bronze axes and daggers, Gallo-Roman coins, and Merovingian sarcophagi. The range of objects and broad time span give the collection a different focus from looking at a single monument or work of art: here, finds from different periods and material groups come together.

Another way to explore the area is the cultural and historical tour of Conbaristum, the Latin name of the municipality of Châtelais. The ARCS offers this tour; visits can be arranged by reservation. If you would like to include it in your plans, take this option into account. The tour focuses on the history of the municipality and complements the themes of fortifications, art and the archaeological collection with another form of local history.

The Circuit de Châtelais

The Circuit de Châtelais starts in Châtelais and is 15.5 kilometres long. The yellow-marked hiking trail is rated moderate; walking time is about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Its paths pass through varied landscapes and natural habitats. From a ridge marking the boundary between Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne, the route offers views over the Mayenne. Route details may change, so check the latest information before setting off.

To choose what to focus on, it helps to distinguish between the options: the Porte Guerchoise, Vierge de Pitié and museum represent architectural, artistic and archaeological history; the Circuit is a longer hiking option with scenic views. This makes it possible to plan a visit to Châtelais according to your interests without combining the cultural attractions and the circular trail into a single route.
