The Sarthe flows through Châteauneuf-Sur-Sarthe, while its architectural history spans medieval churches to the later conversion of a manor house. This gives your trip two clear focal points: river landscapes and cultural heritage. Whether you are more interested in architecture, historical uses or activities on the water, you can decide based on specific visiting options and routes.

Churches and manor house: architectural history in several chapters

Notre-Dame de Séronnes dates from the 12th century. The church in Châteauneuf-Sur-Sarthe features elegant rib vaults and preserves remnants of early 13th-century wall paintings. Rib vaults are a type of vault with intersecting ribs; the wall paintings add surviving visual evidence to this architectural perspective. The historical story thus extends from the building’s form to a tangible trace of medieval design.

The Manoir de la Véroullière is a former manor house dating from the 12th century and held seigneurial status. In the 19th century, it was converted into a model farm. These two dates mark two historical roles: its original function as a seigneurial residence and its later agricultural conversion. On request, one-hour guided tours are offered for groups and individuals, covering the interior and exterior courtyards, the stair tower, the former chapel, the communal ovens and the riding arena. Ask in advance about the current arrangements.

River heritage, routes and planning your visit

The Maison de la rivière is a museum dedicated to the river heritage of the Maine basin. Exhibits include an authentic component of a gate known as a “porte marinière,” as well as collections of objects, models and reconstructions. The museum therefore focuses not only on the river landscape, but also on the objects and representations through which river heritage is conveyed. Visits to the Maison de la rivière are available to groups only; ask in advance about the current arrangements.

The type of visit may determine your choice: the Maison de la rivière is open to groups only. At the Manoir de la Véroullière, one-hour guided tours are also available to individuals on request. If you are travelling alone, check the current options at the Manoir in advance; group visits remain the stated requirement at the Maison.

The Sarthe flows through Châteauneuf-Sur-Sarthe. Recreational boating and fishing are possible on the river; local conditions and permits may apply. If you would rather explore the area on foot, the Circuit des Varennes circular route connects the discovery of Châteauneuf’s bocage landscapes with the banks of the Sarthe. This lets you tailor your interest in the river in different ways: to activities on the water or to the landscape and riverbanks along the route.

GPX and KML files are available for the Sentier du Margas, allowing you to export the walking route to a GPS device or another navigation tool. This provides digital navigation assistance for this trail, while the Circuit des Varennes is characterised by its connection between bocage landscapes and riverbanks. When choosing between the two routes, you can therefore consider both the landscape and your preferred navigation format.
