Saint-Philbert-De-Grand-Lieu can be explored through three distinct interests: Carolingian architecture, waterside landscapes and a significant terroir. The abbey church at the “Déas” site was built at the beginning of the 9th century and is one of the few surviving examples of Carolingian architecture in Europe. The Boulogne River and Lake Grand Lieu also shape the natural and architectural landscape. You do not need to pack these themes into a tight schedule during your stay: you can give different emphasis to culture, time outdoors and regional food and drink.

The Déas Abbey Church and its architectural history

The Déas Abbey Church is a distinctive cultural attraction that is also easy to explore. You can visit it on a self-guided tour. Information panels are displayed in each area, and a visitor guide is available at reception. The tour combines the freedom to find your own way with explanations of the different areas. The building dates from the beginning of the 9th century and is one of the few surviving examples of Carolingian architecture in Europe. For those interested in architectural history, its appeal lies in the combination of a specific construction period and a rare place in architectural history. If you want to include culture in your stay, you can make the abbey church a destination in its own right, rather than having to combine your visit with other activities.

Water and outdoor landscapes

For time outdoors, there is another option: the Base de loisirs de La Boulogne covers 20 hectares between a canal and a river and offers opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Boulogne River and Lake Grand Lieu can be seen from the heights; both shape the natural and architectural landscape of Saint-Philbert-De-Grand-Lieu. The Circuit des Marais passes by the Boulogne marshes and through the area around the lake. Along the route, you will find varied agricultural landscapes, including meadows, large-scale arable farming, vegetable growing and duck farming. With a little attentiveness, you may be able to spot birds such as the grey heron. This means that a recreation area between a canal and a river and a route connected with marshes, the lake area and agriculture offer different ways to enjoy nature.

Two routes, one landmark

The two named routes can also be distinguished by their connection to Parc de la Boulogne. The Boucle vélo n°1 links La Chevrolière and Saint-Philbert-De-Grand-Lieu and passes Parc de la Boulogne on Avenue de Nantes in Saint-Philbert-De-Grand-Lieu. The Circuit des Marais starts at Parc de la Boulogne on Avenue de Nantes. This makes the park a specific landmark on both routes, but with a different role: the Boucle passes it, while the Circuit starts there.

Terroir and finding accommodation

Saint-Philbert-De-Grand-Lieu is a significant terroir for AOC Muscadet Côtes de GrandLieu and Gros Plant. This adds a clearly defined regional food and drink connection to the architectural and landscape themes. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide which interest you want to shape your days; this lets you tailor your accommodation search to your own travel interests without trying to fit culture, time outdoors and regional produce into every day.
