Houquetot offers two very different scales of heritage: individual architectural features in the village and a 60-kilometre circular route through the countryside. At Charreterie H1 and Église Saint-Aubin, you can discover specific architectural details; the Circuit des clos masures, by contrast, takes in clos masures surrounded by shelterbelt trees, picturesque villages, and manor houses and châteaux visible from the road. You can therefore focus on either architectural history or the landscapes along the route.

Charreterie H1 and rural architecture

Charreterie H1 is located on Route du parc d’Anxtot in Houquetot. Its timber frame, timber-clad façades, open eastern gable, and slate roof describe its construction and exterior appearance. The timber frame is the load-bearing structure; the cladding and roof provide further specific details about the building’s form. Charreterie H1 was selected for its historic and landscape value. This means the focus is not only on individual building elements, but also on how the building fits into the landscape. Another rural landmark is Ferme de l’Etoile, described as a typical clos masure. Its dovecote is located in Houquetot (76110).

The Circuit des clos masures

The Circuit des clos masures is a signposted 60-kilometre circular route. It starts at Bréauté-Beuzeville station and heads towards Houquetot. Clos masures surrounded by shelterbelt trees shape the landscape along the route, which also passes through picturesque villages. Manor houses and châteaux are visible from the road. The route’s length and direction towards Houquetot give it a different scale from the individual buildings in the village. If you include this route in your plans, check the signposting locally.

Romanesque features at Église Saint-Aubin

Église Saint-Aubin is one of Houquetot’s historic monuments and places of interest. Its building history reveals several layers from different periods: stones from an earlier building were reused, leaving Romanesque features around the window openings and on the corbels of the bell tower. A blocked-up Romanesque window opening also remains in the north wall. The church was completely remodelled in 1850.

Putting activities in context

The activities mentioned also vary in format and have a clear connection to a particular time. The 2024 edition of “Les Boucles du Chat Roule” was a timed mountain bike race organised by the Comité Houquetotais d’Activités Thématiques. It took place in Houquetot between the stadium and the clos masure opposite. Also in 2024, a signposted 10 km Nordic walking route linked Houquetot and Bréauté. This puts a timed race alongside a route between two villages. Both activities are documented as examples from 2024.

To help you choose, consider the different scales of these themes: individual buildings and their architectural details on one hand, and the 60-kilometre circular route with its landscapes on the other. This makes it easier to assess Houquetot according to your interest in heritage or landscapes along a route.
