Lonlay-L'abbaye combines a strong connection to nature with a protected abbey heritage and offerings centred on beer and biscuits. The town is part of the Natura 2000 site “Landes du Tertre Bizet et Fosse Arthour”, a Special Area of Conservation under the Habitats Directive. This gives you three specific themes to consider when choosing a destination: landscape, architectural history and the production of regional goods. If you are planning a trip, you can decide which of these themes you would like to spend more time exploring; the nature walks and visits requiring reservations offer different ways to do so.

Nature and walks

The Natura 2000 site includes forests, heathland, partly steep rocky outcrops and scree fields. Forest and heathland represent different types of vegetation, while the rocky outcrops and scree add stony features to the landscape. For travellers choosing a destination based on scenery and nature, this diversity is a clear focal point.

For 2026, the municipal programme lists free nature walks at Fosse Arthour. They last about two hours and start at the Fosse Arthour car park. The Parc Naturel Régional Normandie-Maine is offering seven nature walks there from 16 April to 20 October 2026. This information helps with different aspects of day and date planning: the approximate duration and starting point make it easier to fit a walk into your day, while the dates show which months the Parc programme’s seven walks are scheduled for. If travelling in a later year, check the programme dates that apply then.

Abbey and history

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Lonlay is classified as a historic monument and preserves much of its Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The Benedictine Abbey of Lonlay-l'Abbaye was founded in the 11th century by Guillaume I of BellĂŞme.

Beer and biscuits

At the Château de la Bière, visits covering hop cultivation and beer production are available by prior reservation. They include explanations of the brewing equipment followed by a tasting; direct sales are also available at the château. These elements give the visit a clear sequence, from the agricultural foundations through brewing techniques to the finished product. Reservations are therefore required to plan a visit.

At the Biscuiterie de l'Abbaye, workshop visits are available by prior reservation only. The Biscuiterie’s Sablé de l'Abbaye biscuit was created in 1941. The two culinary themes are therefore quite distinct: the Château combines hops, brewing equipment and tasting, while the Biscuiterie focuses on a workshop visit requiring a reservation and the dated history of a biscuit. This can help you choose activities based on what you want to experience, rather than simply on a keyword such as “local delights”.

There are two different types of constraints to consider when planning your trip: for the nature walks, the duration and the 2026 date range matter; for the visits, prior reservation is key. When arranging your days, you can first check the walks scheduled for specific dates, then the visits that require reservations.
