Le Renouard can be explored through two different interests: architectural history and landscape. The Manoir de Corday ou Cauvigny, the Ferme de la Coulonche and the Église Saint-Pierre provide specific historical points of reference; the ZNIEFF Cuesta du Pays d'Auge and the signposted Boucle du Ronceray add a focus on nature and outdoor activity. When choosing a hotel, this distinction can help you decide in advance what to focus on during your stay: historic architecture, a hike, or both with time planned for each.

Manor Houses and Their History

The Manoir de Corday ou Cauvigny was built around 1585. The Manoir de Cauvigny is a 16th-century half-timbered manor house that was extensively remodeled at the end of the 18th century. Its construction and later alteration belong to different chapters: the half-timbering is characteristic of the manor house’s construction, while the extensive remodeling marks a later architectural phase.

The Manoir de Cauvigny belonged to the Corday family until 1875; Charlotte Corday lived there in her youth. The ownership history and Charlotte Corday’s youth thus provide a biographical connection that goes beyond the building’s architectural development. Guided tours of the exterior grounds of the Manoir de Cauvigny are available; booking by phone in advance is recommended. Call ahead to confirm the details of your visit.

Farmstead and Church

The Ferme de la Coulonche offers a different architectural focus. Several building phases from the 15th and 16th centuries are arranged around an enclosed courtyard. This shapes the complex in two ways: through the successive periods in which its buildings were constructed, and through the courtyard as its spatial center. In 2004, the Ferme was listed as a Monument historique. Its building phases and listing reveal two different aspects: the development of the complex and its official heritage status.

The Église Saint-Pierre was rebuilt in 1465. The church is built of limestone, while the sacristy is made of brick. This combination of materials sets it apart from the manor house’s half-timbering; the Ferme, in turn, offers its own architectural focus with its enclosed courtyard.

Bocage Landscape and Hiking

The ZNIEFF Cuesta du Pays d'Auge includes the municipality of Renouard. The Cuesta’s bocage landscape features limestone slopes, mesophilic forests, damp to peaty meadows, and small valleys. Nature enthusiasts can therefore explore different aspects of the terrain, woodland and types of meadows, rather than just one landscape motif.

The signposted La Boucle du Ronceray hike in Le Renouard is 7.2 kilometers long and takes about two hours. Route information includes a GPS track. The distance and approximate duration can help you fit the hike into your day; check trail conditions locally.

Culture and nature offer different planning anchors for your stay: the historic sites provide a sequence of places to visit, while the hike offers a specific distance and approximate duration. If you want to include both, plan the hike as a separate activity and schedule the cultural visits independently. This lets you divide your time according to the interests that matter most to you.
