A château with a rich history, a protected dolmen and a hiking route that runs partly through the Charentonne Valley give La Ferté-Frênel a varied character. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on architecture and heritage protection, cultural activities in town or the natural surroundings.

Château History and Protected Sites

The present-day Château de La Ferté-Frênel was built between 1865 and 1867 by the Parisian architect Storez for the Marquis de Montaut. The château estate is listed as a Monument historique. The protected site includes the château and its interior fittings, the façades and roofs of the former manor house, the dovecote and the washhouse. It also includes features of the park: moats, bridges, a pond, avenues, woods, flowerbeds, walls and balustrades. The protected area therefore encompasses both buildings and landscaped outdoor areas.

Another monument is the protected dolmen in Le Bocage. It was classified as a Monument historique by a decree dated 14 April 1944. The dates mark different aspects of the monuments’ history: 1865 to 1867 refers to the construction period of the present-day château, while 14 April 1944 is the date the dolmen was classified.

Hiking Route and Natural Surroundings

The Le Dolmen hiking route starts in the Bourg at the gendarmerie car park in La Ferté-Frênel and runs partly through the Charentonne Valley. If you plan to take this route, note the stated starting point; parking conditions may change. Check the current parking situation before setting off.

The grounds of the Château des Rêves also offer a connection with nature: covering 100 hectares, they include a park and woodland and are considered a habitat for wild animals. This presents two different aspects of the landscape: a route that runs partly through the valley and grounds described by their park, woodland and habitat.

Media Library, Market and Other Places to Visit

The La Ferté-Frênel media library is located at 6 Rue du Château in La Ferté-en-Ouche. Activities for children and adults are held throughout the year. The programme includes a reading night, activities for toddlers, author meetings and book signings, a storytime session, creative workshops, toy library activities, coffee gatherings and the Racont’arts festival. Activities may change; check the latest dates before your visit.

The municipal market is held on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 or 1:00 p.m. The season and weather may affect the hours. If the market day is important to your plans, check the current closing time in advance.

Another place to visit is the Étang de la Baronnie, with its playgrounds. Visitor facilities may change; check which amenities are available on site before your visit. Alongside the monuments and hiking route, local cultural activities and the market offer additional ways to shape a stay in La Ferté-Frênel.
