For a trip to Surtainville, the coast, dunes and a designated hiking stage offer different focuses. At Plage de Surtainville, the focus is on activities by the sea; in the dune massif, marked trails explore the landscape between heathland, beaches and cliffs. The GR®223 adds another option with its 18 km Sciotot–Hatainville stage. Before looking for accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding whether the beach, nature trails or planning this stage will shape your stay.

Beach activities and seasonal information

Fishing, kayaking, diving, kitesurfing and windsurfing are all possible at Plage de Surtainville. Surfing is also listed as a possible activity; availability may change. Beach activities can vary depending on the weather, safety conditions and providers, so a flexible daily plan is advisable. During the summer season, the beach at Brèche de l’Eglise is supervised. If you want to take this seasonal supervision into account when planning, check the specific dates and times before your trip.

Surtain Surf School is located in Surtainville, close to the surf areas, and offers a range of options to suit its guests’ needs and preferences. Confirm current booking options with the provider before making a reservation.

Dunes and hiking trails

The Surtainville dune massif is part of the protected Natura 2000 natural area “Banc et récifs de Surtainville”. Marked trails lead visitors through this area between heathland, beaches and cliffs. Access to the trails may change temporarily due to erosion management; check in advance if you have a particular route in mind. The dunes were also among the very first acquisitions by the Conservatoire du littoral in Normandy.

The marked trails and the GR®223 stage offer different ways to plan a hike: the dune trails focus on exploring the natural area, while the Sciotot–Hatainville stage has a set distance of 18 km. If a specified distance is important to you when choosing a route, the stage provides a concrete guide; the dune trails, by contrast, explore the landscape between heathland, beaches and cliffs.

Heritage along the way and in town

The GR®223 also passes the Étang and the ruins of Chapelle Saint-Ergouêfle. Access to the ruins may be restricted; bear this in mind if you are planning a possible stop. Saint-Pierre Church in Surtainville has a slate floor known as the Pierre du Pou.

Getting there and choosing a place to stay

By car, you can reach Surtainville via the D904 in the direction of Les Pieux or Barneville-Carteret. Possible bus connections for your journey include services on the Cap Cotentin network from the nearest railway stations in Valognes or Cherbourg. These include line s9 between Les Moitiers-d’Allone and Bricquebec-en-Cotentin. Bus routes and timetables may change, so check the current connections before travelling.

When looking for a place to stay, it helps to decide on your main focus first: beach activities, exploring the dune trails or the 18 km stage each offer a different emphasis.
