Ravenoville combines a distinctive coastal landscape with history: its colorful beach huts are among the town’s original features, the Ancienne redoute bears witness to the coastal defenses of the Cotentin under the Ancien Régime, and a bunker reinforces the stone seawall on the beach. There is also the opportunity to fish on the beach and a 26 km stage of the GR®223. This gives you different ways to plan your trip: explore the town’s coastal heritage or hike the long stage.

Beach Huts and Coastal Heritage

A row of former huts stretches along Ravenoville beach. Some of them have been partly converted into houses that open onto the sea. The colorful beach huts are among the town’s original features. The coastal heritage also includes small fishermen’s houses and small cottages that housed people from the inland area. Ravenoville’s coastal landscape thus encompasses different kinds of dwellings: from the former beach huts and their conversion to the fishermen’s houses and cottages for people from inland. If you are interested in the architectural history of the shoreline, you can view these as distinct elements of the coastal heritage rather than grouping them under a single type.

The stone seawall adds a different note. A bunker reinforces it on the beach, pointing to the coastal defenses. Together with the Ancienne redoute, it shows that Ravenoville’s coastal heritage also encompasses different forms of defense: a structure on the seawall and a historic redoubt with its ditches.

The Ancienne redoute and its history

The Ancienne redoute was built in the second half of the 17th century and bears witness to the coastal defenses of the Cotentin under the Ancien Régime. Its construction date and its later listing are two different reference points for understanding its history. The decree of September 14, 1992, listed the redoubt, including its ditches, as a historic monument, but excluded the building inside. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction of the site from its later protection; at the same time, the scope of the listing is clearly defined. The redoubt and its ditches are included, but the building inside is not.

Beach Activities and the GR®223 Stage

Fishing is possible on the beach. Coastal conditions and local regulations may vary. If fishing is part of your stay, check the applicable rules in advance. Ravenoville has picnic tables and playgrounds for outings with family or friends. As facilities may change, it is a good idea to check their current condition shortly before your visit. These activities offer a different focus for planning than the hiking stage: whether to choose an outing with a picnic or playtime, or a longer route, depends on how you want to spend your stay.

The 26 km stage of the GR®223 runs from Carentan via Utah Beach to Ravenoville. The order of the places named gives the route a clear progression: Carentan is the starting point, Utah Beach is along the way, and Ravenoville is the destination. This means you can include Ravenoville in your travel plans both as a coastal town with its own historic heritage and as the endpoint of this stage. The stage length is a useful point of reference when planning a day’s hike; conditions on the route can change, so it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
