Pirou-Plage offers various reasons to enjoy a coastal stay. Depending on the tides, you can swim or go shore fishing on foot in the tidal zone; at low tide, you can also swim in a pool of water. The GR®223 reaches Pirou-Plage and then follows the sea dyke. There are also dunes, seasonal water sports and the Foire aux bulots, held every year at the end of April. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether tides, walking trails or a particular event date will shape your stay.
Dunes and walking trails
The Pirou dunes lie on either side of Pirou-Plage. They are one of four dune areas within the sensitive natural sites protected by the département. The dunes are home to endemic plants, including the European orchid Orchis bouffon. This gives the coast a botanical interest in addition to its beach activities: the plant life is a subject in its own right for anyone interested in the landscape.
The GR®223 reaches Pirou-Plage and then follows the sea dyke. The long-distance trail also passes through dunes before reaching the Havre de Geffosses. The route thus includes both a section along the dyke and a stretch through the dunes. The GR®223 stage from Pirou-Pont to Coutainville-Plage is 19 km long, providing a specific distance to help you plan your walk.
Tides, swimming and shore fishing
The tide is an important factor when planning beach activities. Swimming and shore fishing on foot in the tidal zone are possible depending on the tides. On sandy areas, beachcombers and shore fishers can find swimming crabs, mussels, periwinkles and carpet shell clams. At low tide, you can also swim in a pool of water. So if you are planning your day around a particular activity, take the tide times into account.
Water sports with seasonal conditions
Pirou Fun Beach offers jet ski trips accompanied by a certified instructor, departing from its chalet on the campsite esplanade in Pirou-Plage. Operating times and conditions vary by season. From its base in Pirou-Plage, the provider also rents stand-up paddleboards and kayaks; their availability also depends on the season and conditions. The trips and rentals are separate offerings. If either is important to your trip, check the current times or availability in advance.
The Foire aux bulots at the end of April
The Foire aux bulots is held every year over a weekend at the end of April in Pirou-Plage; it was founded in 1996. Professional vendors sell seafood at the event. Details may vary from one year’s edition to the next. If you want to plan your visit around the Foire, check the date for the year in question.
Choose your travel dates based on what brings you here
When searching for a holiday rental, your reason for travelling can be a useful starting point: the Foire provides a fixed reference point with its weekend at the end of April, beach activities depend on the tide, and water sports depend on the season and conditions.
