For a stay in Parigny, hiking trails and architectural history offer two distinct areas of interest. The Chemin de la Renouillère is part of the trail network, while the Château de Parigny and Notre-Dame Church offer their own historical features. You can tailor your trip to focus on trails and scenery, architecture, or a mix of both.

Hiking in Parigny and Grandparigny

The Chemin de la Renouillère is part of the hiking trail network in Parigny. In the commune of Grandparigny, the trails offer panoramic views of the Sélune Valley. Picnic areas along the trails provide places to take a break; along the way, you can also meet local producers. The views, places to rest and opportunities to meet producers appeal to different interests.

The Grande boucle parignaise in Grandparigny is a yellow-marked circular hiking route covering 16.5 kilometres, with 205 metres of elevation gain. The moderately difficult route takes about four hours and runs along rue Saint-Berthevin (RD 977) and chemin rural du Champ Fleury. The distance, elevation gain, difficulty and approximate duration offer different points of reference for planning your hike; the time is a rough estimate, not a minute-by-minute schedule.

Historic traces along the trails

Several hiking trails in Parigny follow the former railway line. Routes also pass the site of the former railway station and the Lavoir de la Douenne. Along the trails, you can also discover an outdoor art gallery. The hiking routes thus offer both points of historical interest and public art.

The château and the church

Parts of the Château de Parigny date from the 15th century. Well-preserved architectural details include small towers topped with conical roofs, known as poivrières. The château is partially protected as a historic monument; it was listed on 26 April 1976. The protection covers the façades and roofs, a staircase with a wooden balustrade, the decorated drawing room, the billiard room on the ground floor, and the dovecote. An earlier visitor information notice mentioned tours of the privately owned Château de Parigny in summer, from mid-June to mid-July, as well as during the Journées du Patrimoine in September; check before your trip whether tours are available.

The oldest parts of Notre-Dame Church date from the 14th and 15th centuries, making some of them older than the 15th-century parts of the château. The church also has a reliquary altar for Saint-Berthevin. The two sites therefore offer different highlights of Parigny’s architectural history: the château’s protected features and small towers, and the church’s older fabric and reliquary altar.

Cycling route in the commune

Grandparigny is crossed by a former railway line that has now been converted into the Véloscénie cycling route, connecting Paris with Mont-Saint-Michel. This adds a cycling focus at the commune level to the hiking opportunities.
