Les Moitiers-D'allonne offers a range of ways to plan a trip: The Dunes d'Hatainville combine a shifting dune landscape with habitats for birds and amphibians. Hiking trails offer different points of interest, while the historic sites range from a Neolithic covered passage to 19th-century windmills.
Dune Landscape and Nature
In the Dunes d'Hatainville, shifting white and grey dunes give the landscape its changing character. The remarkable flora includes rare species. The habitats are also diverse: the dunes provide nesting sites for protected birds, while temporary and permanent ponds serve as habitats for amphibians. Alongside its distinctive landforms, the landscape therefore has an ecological dimension that can be a focus of a nature getaway.
A hiking trail about 13 kilometres long crosses the Dunes d'Hatainville. Information boards and interpretive panels are located along the route. When planning your trip, consider both the approximate distance and the opportunity to learn about the landscape and nature along the way. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
Hiking Trails with Different Details
Le Bourgbosquet offers another way to plan a hike: the green nature trail runs mainly along tracks, paths and quiet side roads. The Circuit des Moulins is classed as an easy hiking route for beginners and is 10.7 kilometres long. This route therefore comes with a clear difficulty rating as well as a stated distance. The trail through the dunes is longer, at about 13 kilometres, and passes information boards. You can compare the Circuit des Moulins’ stated rating with what you have in mind for a hike, and use the distance and interpretive panels as reference points for the dune route.
The two distances are not walking times: they give you an indication of the length of the routes, not how long your hike will take. If you are primarily looking for a hike described as easy, the Circuit des Moulins’ rating is the relevant point of comparison. If you are interested in the dune landscape, the approximate trail length and the panels along the route are the main points to consider. For either option, it is worth factoring current trail conditions into your plans for the day.
Cultural Heritage and Architectural History
The covered passage, known as the Autel des Druides, is located in the Grand-Breuil area of Les Moitiers-D'allonne. The structure dates from the Neolithic period and is classified as a historic monument. Its architectural history therefore reaches far back into prehistory.
Notre-Dame Church offers further specific details: its ensemble includes 14 figurative stained-glass windows in window openings 1 to 14 in the choir, nave and north side chapel. The north chapel also contains a carved limestone corbel from the 16th century. It depicts the eagle of Saint John and is listed as a protected cultural object. Anyone interested in church art will find both stained glass and an individual stone carving here, each offering a different perspective on the building.
Three windmills were built on the Lande des trois moulins between 1825 and 1875 as tower mills. They are considered representative of the Cotentin mill style. The Manoir de Thoville dates from the 16th to 17th centuries and includes the seigneurial chapel of Notre-Dame de Vauvert, which is considered the oldest part of the building. Together, these examples illustrate different historical periods and architectural forms, from the Neolithic structure to the chapel and corbel, and the 19th-century tower mills.
