When planning a stay in La Pernelle, you can focus on cultural history or trails through the landscape. Highlights include listed historic buildings, a grotto with religious significance, fortifications from the Second World War and hiking trails. You can plan your visit around what interests you most: architecture and history, a particular circular route or the heathland. The view across the Val de Saire is another highlight.

Heritage between church, grotto and fortifications

The former guard post in La Pernelle is partially listed as a historic monument. The listing, dated 5 May 1975, protects its façades and roofs. The Manoir d’Ourville is also partially protected: the protected features are its façades and roofs, the entrance portico and the gateway leading to the garden. It was listed on 3 July 1975. At Sainte-Pétronille Church, the bell tower has been listed as a historic monument since 5 May 1975. The protected features therefore vary from one building to another and include individual architectural elements as well as façades.

The Grotto of La Pernelle is a religious site in its own right. Created in 1928 in the rocks above the church, it contains a statue of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes. It was designed as an attempt to recreate the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes. A traditional pilgrimage takes place there every August. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the exact date in advance. This lets you include the recurring event in your plans without confusing the pilgrimage with the historic buildings that are permanently there.

The fortifications from the Second World War also contribute to the historic interest of the area. The Wn 144 site comprises nine elements, all of which are visible; its historical and cultural significance is considered exceptional. Separate from this is a Regelbau 608-type bunker built in 1943. It was constructed to house the staff of the Grenadier Regiment 729, commanded by Colonel Helmuth Rohrbach, and is in very good condition. Access may vary depending on the structure and its ownership. The Wn 144 site comprises nine visible elements; the Regelbau 608 served as accommodation for the regimental staff.

Heathland, views and hiking trails

The Landes de la Pernelle are among the Manche Department’s 35 Espaces Naturels Sensibles (Sensitive Natural Areas) and are classified as heathland. La Pernelle also offers one of the finest views across the Val de Saire. The panorama stretches from the Gatteville lighthouse to Pointe du Hoc and includes the Vauban towers in the bay of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. Depending on the season, weather and visibility can affect the view.

The “Panorama sur le Val de Saire” hiking trail is an easy 5.8-kilometre circular route with 131 metres of elevation gain. It starts and ends at the La Pernelle viewpoint. If you want to choose a route based on its distance and elevation gain, you can take these details into account along with its stated difficulty level. The “La Vigie du Val de Saire” trail, by contrast, starts at Sainte-Pétronille Church. It is not served by the Cap Cotentin bus network, but can be reached by car, and there is a car park near the starting point. If you plan to take this trail, check local bus and parking options before setting off, as transport information can change.

Cuisine and accommodation planning

Cuisine is another possible focus: Le Panoramique in La Pernelle offers fine dining, fish and Norman cuisine. If you plan to visit the restaurant, check its current menu and availability in advance. The historic sites, the signposted circular route and the August event offer different points of interest; there is no need to visit them in a set order.
