The Church of Saint-Ebremond combines Romanesque architecture with a 12th-century baptismal font. There is also a circular hiking trail, a cycling route, and a horse-riding route that reaches La Barre-De-Semilly. When planning your stay, you can choose between the cultural monument and the different types of routes. The route details are not interchangeable: the circular hiking trail has a precisely named starting point, an older distance and duration are available for the cycling route, while the horse-riding route is described as passing through the bocage.

Church of Saint-Ebremond: Romanesque Architecture and Masonry

The Church of Saint-Ebremond is Romanesque and built from Briovérien schist. Its masonry is laid in a herringbone pattern. The term describes the arrangement of the stones in a pattern reminiscent of fish bones; this allows the building material and the construction technique to be considered as two distinct architectural features. The Romanesque classification adds to this view of the construction and gives the church a clear cultural and historical focus.

Another detail can be found inside: the baptismal font is in the northwest corner of the nave. It is made of moulded limestone, dates from the 12th century, and is also Romanesque. “Moulded” describes the shaped finish of the stone. The font is protected as a movable cultural object; it was listed for protection on 21 May 1982. This protection applies to the baptismal font, not to the church building as a whole. Thus, the church’s Romanesque design and the protection of an individual furnishing stand as two distinct aspects.

Route Options: On Foot, by Bike, and on Horseback

The La Barre de Semilly circular hiking trail starts at Place de l’église. This square is therefore the specific landmark for setting out on the loop. Local conditions can change; check them before setting off.

A cycling brochure from 2010 gives a distance of 19 km and a duration of about three hours for Les Semilly. It recommends starting in the town centre and heading towards Sainte-Suzanne-sur-Vire. The same edition lists the Romanesque Church of Saint-Ebremond as a point of interest on Circuit 39: Les Semilly. The approximate duration and distance apply to that edition of the brochure; check the route conditions before using it. The circular trail starts at Place de l’église; the cycling brochure recommends the town centre as the starting point.

The La Rando des Haras Nationaux – Haras National de Saint-Lô – Baudre horse-riding route leads to La Barre-De-Semilly. Its paths run through the bocage. This landscape gives the horse-riding route a distinct character alongside the named starting point of the circular hiking trail and the distance and duration details for cycling. As the publisher may revise route details, check the information before planning your trip.
