A medieval road, a stream running through the village and a bocage trail give L’Étang-Bertrand different points of reference. They are joined by the Église Saint-Siméon-Stylite and the history of a mill mentioned in a document dating from shortly before 1204. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether local history, rural paths or both are your main focus.

Local and landscape features

The Grosmont stream crosses L’Étang-Bertrand from west to east and flows into the Dalle. Carrière-Bertran also tells a different story of connection: it was a medieval road from Bricquebec to the Baie des Veys. A baronial charter dated 1395 documents it as an old route. It led from Bricquebec towards the fords of Saint-Clément and the shore near Buchierville. Its history can therefore be understood both in terms of its wider destination and its specifically named waypoints.

Church and historical traces

The present-day Église Saint-Siméon-Stylite is an ogival building, probably built towards the end of the 19th century. Ten objects in the church are protected. Its furnishings include a 19th-century baptismal font, statues of Saint Vincent, Saint Siméon and Saint Sebastian from the same century, and a Mazuet stained-glass window dating from the 19th to 20th century. The altarpiece dates from the 17th century; the collection also includes a Madonna and Child. Furnishings from several centuries thus sit alongside a church building that was probably constructed in the late 19th century.

The Ferme Manoir de la Dalle dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. Another historical reference is the 9th US Air Force monument: it was inaugurated in June 2009 and commemorates the B-26 Marauder 41-31968, nicknamed Hearse for six. The aircraft crashed at this site on 13 April 1944. The building’s history, the church furnishings and the memorial to the Second World War each offer a distinct historical perspective.

The mill at two points in history

The Moulin de l’Étang-Bertrand is first mentioned in a document dating from shortly before 1204. A specific account of its equipment survives from 1786: at the time, the mill had two waterwheels, one for wheat and buckwheat and one for barley.

Bocage trail and seasonal conditions

The Balade dans le bocage entre Négreville et l’Etang-Bertrand runs mainly along rural roads and paths. It is accessible to mountain bikes, pedestrians and horses. The route includes two crossings of roads with little traffic; in winter, there is a short wet section at the end. If you plan to take this route, you can factor the stated modes of travel and seasonal trail condition directly into your plans, without assuming a walking or riding time that has not been specified.

Food and accommodation

The Auberge de la Vallée de la Douve is located in L’Étang-Bertrand in the Cotentin and offers food to eat in or take away, including pizzas, burgers and homemade French fries. The menu may change. Another historical accommodation reference is the Maison de l’Oraille, which is part of the local history: the private 18th-century property was converted into a guesthouse with a gîte and rooms. These details combine a specific food offering with the history of a property, though the two do not serve the same purpose when planning a trip.
