A long sandy beach on the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel defines Jullouville. The coast is directly accessible from the town center, and there is more to enjoy during a stay than just the beach: water sports, coastal paths and traces of the town’s seaside-resort and military history offer different ways to plan your visit.

Beach, water sports and seasonal activities

The beaches are ideal for swimming, land sailing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, shore fishing and walks along the water. You can shape your stay around your interests, from a stroll along the coast to activities on the water. Plage de Jullouville – Centre / Casino, the main beach, has a seafront promenade and bathing cabins. The lifeguard station is staffed in July and August.

Depending on the season, Base nautique de Jullouville offers sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and dinghy sailing. Introductory sessions, courses and training, as well as equipment rental, are also available. Since activities are seasonal, it is advisable to check availability before your trip. This can help you decide whether to plan your stay mainly around beach time or a particular water sport.

Coastal paths and landscapes

Les balcons de la baie is a cycling route through the heathland of Saint-Michel-des-Loups, along Chemin des Monts and past the classified cliffs of Carolles-Champeaux. Along the way, panoramic views open up over the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The route also includes a 2.3 km walking detour to Lande des Cent vergées, a designated protected natural area. This detour is specifically for walking and is distinct from the cycling route itself.

Another perspective on the landscape is offered by the GR® 223 stage from Bouillon to Genêts, with views over the bay and the natural scenery of the Lude valley. At Port du Lude, you can take a swim break before continuing on to Cabane Vauban. The coastal paths offer different ways to experience the landscape; however, the routes mentioned should not be taken to have a stated walking time or a shared stage length.

Seaside-resort history and maritime heritage

Cabane Vauban is a seaside landmark of Jullouville’s historical and landscape heritage. It recalls Normandy’s maritime and military history and is connected to the seafront promenade and paths for exploring the town’s heritage. From its viewpoint, you can see across the bay and the maritime landscape.

The history of the seaside resort is also reflected in its buildings and town layout. Château de la Mare was built as a private residence in 1907 and is part of Jullouville’s development as a seaside resort in the early 20th century. In 1944, it served as the headquarters of the Allied troops in this sector; General Dwight D. Eisenhower directed some of the military operations connected with the liberation from there. Jullouville’s historic seaside-resort layout follows a fan-shaped plan, with the casino and grand hotel at its center.

Older traces are also part of the townscape: Menhir de Vaumoisson is a prehistoric megalith and one of the oldest records of Jullouville’s past. The traditional pêcheries are V-shaped stone walls that become visible only at low tide. Their history dates back to the 15th century; the first structures were originally built of wood. In Bouillon, a small apple tree also grows directly out of the outer wall on the north side of the bell tower of the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste.

Market and regional produce

Jullouville’s weekly market offers produce from local producers: seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheese, meat, fish and seafood, as well as bread, pastries and regional specialties. The vendors and products you find there may vary. The market adds an insight into regional produce to the beach and heritage experiences, without requiring you to visit on a particular market day or look for a specific product.
