Discover Hauteville-la-Guichard through two themes: cultural history and landscape. The parish church, Musée Tancrède and several waymarked trails offer different perspectives, from medieval architecture to the bocage countryside of Coutances.
Church and Museum
The nave of the parish church in Hauteville-la-Guichard dates from the 11th century. Diagonal herringbone masonry is visible on the south wall. This brings together two distinct architectural points of reference: the date of the nave and a specific pattern on the outer wall.
A marble memorial plaque installed in 1923 is located in the choir. It commemorates the history of the Hauteville family in southern Italy and the Mediterranean region. Alongside the church’s architectural history, it offers a reminder of a story that reaches beyond Hauteville-la-Guichard. The dates serve different purposes: the 11th century dates the nave, while 1923 marks the installation of the memorial plaque. The church’s architectural history and this later memorial thus stand side by side as two distinct points of reference in time.
The Musée Tancrède is housed in the former presbytery and includes a garden with a medieval-inspired design. Its exhibition tells the story of the sons of Tancrède de Hauteville, who travelled to southern Italy and Sicily, using maps and depictions of Norman art in Sicily. The maps and references to art provide a geographical and cultural context for this family history.
Further traces of history
The Château de Hauteville preserves remains from the reign of Louis XVI. The Manoir du Bouillon offers a different historical reference: it was a fortified manor house, and numerous loopholes are visible in its enclosing wall. For the château, the reign provides the historical anchor; at the manor, its defensive character can be identified by a specific architectural feature.
Circular walking trails and landscapes
The waymarked circular walking trails are “La belette et le coucou”, “La Vallée de la Vanloue”, “Le chemin de Creully” and “Les deux vallées”. The four names offer different starting points when planning time outdoors in Hauteville-la-Guichard.
The “Sur la trace des Tancrède” route starts at the church, near the Musée Tancrède in the former presbytery. It passes through the bocage countryside of Coutances, characterised by traditional farms, and follows the GR de Pays “Trésors cachés de Coutances” long-distance footpath. Here, a specific starting point meets a distinctive cultural landscape.
From the hamlet of Le Mont in Hauteville-la-Guichard, you can enjoy a very extensive panorama. Thus, the landscape theme encompasses not only the bocage, but also a clearly named place with wide-ranging views. When planning an outing, you can choose from several waymarked circular trails as well as a route with a described itinerary and landscape setting.
