When planning a trip to Champcervon, two distinct points of interest stand side by side: the Manoir de Lerre as a historic building and the village’s place within the bocage countryside. A reredos with a detailed religious scene, a memorial window inaugurated in 1928, and a programme entry for the Pierres en Lumières festival add to the cultural themes. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether to focus your stay more on architecture and art, or also on the landscape.

Manoir de Lerre: building history and courtyard complex

The Manoir de Lerre was built towards the end of the 15th century. Four main buildings form a square courtyard. The ground-floor hall of the residence has a monumental fireplace. This presents the overall layout of the complex and a specific interior feature as distinct architectural aspects. The manor has been listed as a Monument historique since December 2016.

Visitors can see the exterior and the ground-floor hall of the residence. As visiting arrangements can change, check access before your visit. This will help you plan around the areas specified as open to visitors.

Reredos and historical dates

The “Adoration by the Angels” reredos comprises a central painting, two fluted columns, two side niches and a triangular pediment. The painting shows two kneeling angels adoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus above a cross and a chalice. You can read the composition from its architectural frame to its subject: the columns, niches and pediment frame the central scene. The ensemble was listed as a protected object in 1973.

The memorial window in Champcervon was inaugurated in 1928. Its inauguration marks a different historical point in time from the age of the manor and the listing of the reredos ensemble. The dates therefore represent different aspects: building history, inauguration and protected status.

Bocage countryside and walking loop

Champcervon belongs to the “La Manche centrale” landscape region, classified as bocage countryside. This offers a different scale for getting your bearings than the manor: here the focus is on the character of the regional landscape, while there it is on a named historic building. By including both themes in your travel plans, you can consider architectural history and landscape as separate but equally important interests.

The Circuit de la Petite Chapelle walking loop passes the Forêt de La Lucerne d’Outremer in the vicinity of Champcervon. This adds a specific landscape feature to your exploration of the area. Check the current status of the walking loop before planning your route.

Events and accommodation search

In the 2023 programme, Le Grippon (Champcervon), in the La Haye-Pesnel area, was included in the Pierres en Lumières festival. If you plan to travel later, check the dates for the relevant year.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what matters most to you: will your trip focus mainly on architectural history and religious art, or would you also like to include the bocage countryside and the walking loop? This will help you compare Champcervon with your own travel interests.
