A stone-vaulted choir dating from the early 14th century, a 1924 washhouse and paths through the valleys show the different ways to explore Cérences. You can discover local history through its buildings and a statue, enjoy an easy walk or experience the landscape on signposted cycling routes.
Church and Local History
The Notre-Dame church has an original nave dating from the early 13th century. Its stone-vaulted choir dates from the early 14th century. The small statue of Notre-Dame de Cérences is also part of the town’s history. Its story is connected with Jehan du Bois: the knight of Pirou became lord of Cérences through his marriage to Jeanne de Carbonnel, the heir to a local seigneur. On that occasion, he gave the statue to the parish.
The Washhouse as a Building and Meeting Place
The Lavoir de l'Hôtel Roy dates from 1924. It has two basins and is surrounded by a covered gallery with a pitched roof. Beyond its architecture, the washhouse tells the story of a social hub of village life: women beat, rubbed, rinsed and wrung out their laundry here while talking together. The basins and the surrounding gallery are therefore part of a place whose former use is just as interesting as its construction.
Walks and a Village Tour
The La Vallée de la Chaussée loop is an easy family walk through the bocage and valleys of Cérences. The 4.5-kilometre route takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts at the washhouse and follows streams and sunken lanes. The loop thus combines a specific walking route with several of the landscape features associated with Cérences.
To take a guided tour of the village, you can join local village guides. Confirm availability locally in advance. Near the washhouse, on the road to Ver, there is also a rest area for walkers with picnic tables and public toilets. Check whether the facilities are available before your visit.
Adventure Park and Cycling Routes
At the edge of Cérences, on the road to Quettreville-sur-Sienne, is the La Forêt des Elfes adventure park. It has more than 60 different adventure activities, including ten zip lines. The courses are open to children aged three and over.
For cycling trips, Les trois vallées passes through the three green valleys of the Sienne, Boscq and Vanlée. The VTT – Les hameaux de Cérences mountain-biking route runs through the bocage and the hamlets of Cérences. Along the way, sunken lanes link the Sienne Valley with the Airou Valley. While Les trois vallées focuses on the three valleys, the mountain-biking route highlights hamlets, bocage and sunken lanes.
River Landscape and Pilgrimage Route
Near Cérences, the Sienne forms beautiful meanders, is lined with scattered mills and carries salmon. Those interested in pilgrimage routes will find Cérences on the Chemins du Mont-Saint-Michel, where it is a stopover town. Modern-day pilgrims stop there to admire the church. If you plan to stop there along the way, check the current trail conditions.
