Canville-la-Rocque brings together two distinct themes for a stay: an easy hike through the bocage and a layered local history. The circular trail “Le pendu dépendu et les caches du Diable” is 9 km long and takes about three hours. The Église Saint-Malo was built at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century and contains wall paintings about a pilgrimage legend; the Château d’Olonde combines traces of several building phases.

Hiking through the bocage

The circular trail is an easy hike marked in blue. The 9 km describe the route length, while the approximately three-hour duration gives an estimated time frame; distance and time are two different planning considerations. The paths pass through the bocage and offer views of the maritime landscape around the port of Portbail. The contrast between bocage paths and maritime views brings together different landscape settings. The trail’s car park is opposite the Église Saint-Malo. Church, legend and sculpture

The Église Saint-Malo in Canville-la-Rocque was built at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. Its wall paintings tell the legend of the “Pendu Dépendu,” which recounts the fate of three German pilgrims on the Way of St James. On the east wall of the north chapel is a statue of John the Baptist, a 16th-century sculpture. The name “Pendu Dépendu” connects the hiking trail with the subject of the wall paintings. The paintings and the statue offer different points of emphasis: one tells a pilgrimage story, while the other is a specific, site-located work of sculpture. The church’s construction period and the statue’s date are close in time; the wall paintings add a pilgrimage narrative to these architectural and artistic details.

Building phases and historic protection

The Château d’Olonde is a protected castle complex in Canville-la-Rocque. It includes remains of a castle complex from the 12th century, traces of a reconstruction from the beginning of the 16th century with two square towers, and a residential building rebuilt in the 18th century. On November 29, 2000, the Château was partially listed as a historic monument. The protection includes, among other things, the area of the old castle, including its ditches and motte, the surviving castle buildings, the west and north towers, and certain façades and roofs. The building history and the historic designation address different questions: the building phases span the 12th to the 18th century, while the listing identifies selected protected parts of the complex.
