Mont de Besneville brings together a distinctive landscape and several ways to explore it on foot. On this natural site, heathland, gorse and grassland form a patchwork. The well-preserved surroundings benefit birds, plants typical of acidic soils, butterflies and insects. As a result, the site’s character comes not only from its viewpoint but also from the particular composition of its habitat.
Walking and views
The marked trails on Mont de Besneville are accessible to hikers of all experience levels. The “Le Mont de Besneville” circular route follows small roads up to the Mont and offers 360-degree views over the Cotentin bocage landscape and the Channel Islands. It is considered an easy green trail; the inclines are mostly moderate. The climb to the Mont is the exception, reaching just over 100 metres in altitude. The moderate rating therefore describes most of the route, not every section equally.
The summit is easy to reach on foot. Its panorama takes in the bocage landscape and the beaches of Cotentin; on a clear day, the Channel Islands are also visible on the horizon. The circular route focuses on the 360-degree views, while the summit panorama also includes the beaches of Cotentin. You can choose based on whether you prefer the route itself or the views from the summit.
By gravel bike
The “Le Mont de Besneville” gravel loop is signposted with VTT markers, a black gravel sticker and route number 41. The combination of general markers, a gravel sticker and a route number makes the signage clear: the number identifies the route, while the black sticker indicates its gravel-bike designation. Alongside the walking trails, this gives you a clearly marked cycling route to choose from.
Traces of local history
The history of the Mont includes three former mills. The first was converted into a chapel after the Second World War. The second former mill has an orientation board; check its condition when you visit. Alongside its landscape and trails, the Mont also offers historic buildings and clues to their former use.
The Église Saint-Florent in Besneville has been listed as a historic monument since 6 September 1993. Its distinctive nave, the church’s elongated main section, has two rows of very slender columns. Ample light enters the nave through the openings of the side aisles. The arrangement of the columns and the way light enters give the church interior a striking architectural feature.
Chapelle de la Géranderie also has a specific founding story: it was built in 1744. Jeanne Barbe Collas du Genestel (1684–1761), Lady of Annoville, founded the chapel, donated 4,000 livres toward its construction on her land and endowed it with an annual income of 100 livres. Visits are possible in particular on European Heritage Days. Check the event dates in advance if you are planning a visit.
