Bacilly offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: seasonal visits to the Parc and Château de Chantore, and the history of the Church of Saint-Étienne. It is also connected to the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. The commune is part of the bay’s Natura 2000 site, whose landscape includes various habitat types. When planning your stay, you can match your preferred focus—Château, church art, or landscape—with the relevant visiting conditions and regional connections.

Château de Chantore: Plan Your Visit by Season

Parc Chantore is open to visitors daily from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm from April to September. From October to March, visits are possible only by prior reservation. Check the seasonal schedule before your trip so your plans match the intended period.

The interior of Château de Chantore has its own visiting schedule: in July and August, a one-hour guided tour takes place daily at 3:00 pm. From September to June, interior visits are available by reservation for groups of 15 or more. An interior visit entitles you to visit the park free of charge.

The two visiting schedules do not coincide. In September, the Parc remains open daily during its regular opening hours, while interior visits are already subject to reservations for groups of 15 or more. So if you choose to travel in September, it is worth distinguishing between park opening and interior tours; in July and August, tours are also scheduled daily. The change from August to September affects the interior tours: the daily 3:00 pm tour ends, even though the park remains open daily through the end of the month.

Saint-Étienne: History and Art

The Church of Saint-Étienne in Bacilly can be understood through three dates marking distinct events. It was consecrated in 1283; in 1286, the parish was transferred to Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. The building collapsed in 1816 and was completely rebuilt. The consecration and transfer of the parish therefore belong to its medieval history, while the complete reconstruction marks a later building phase.

The church contains a painted plaster statue of Saint Joseph dating from the second half of the 19th century. On 29 July 1991, it was listed as a protected object. The statue is therefore clearly distinct in date from the rebuilding of the church in 1816. For those interested in cultural history, the parish’s history, the reconstruction, and a later work of art complement one another without collapsing these different stages into a single building phase.

Connection to the Bay: Protected Area and Route

The commune of Bacilly is part of the Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel Natura 2000 site. The bay includes estuaries, mudflats, salt marshes, dune systems, cliffs, rocky islets, and peripheral marshlands. The commune’s connection to the protected area and the bay’s broader landscape context are therefore two distinct aspects of its relationship with nature.

Château de Chantore in Bacilly is a stop on the Route des Roses, which runs along the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. This route context is distinct from the protected-area designation: the Château is a stop on the route, while the Natura 2000 designation refers to the commune’s connection with nature.
