The GR223 takes you along a specific coastal route through Agon-Coutainville: it runs from north to the Pointe d’Agon and then follows the Sienne eastwards. This lets you combine coastal paths, nature and maritime history during your visit. The Baie de Sienne stretches across several areas, including Agon-Coutainville; the Pointe d’Agon is a protected natural area.

Coast, nature and paths

The GR223 lets you explore the Baie de Sienne along the west coast of the Cotentin. Path conditions and signage can change; check them before setting out. The beaches of Coutainville, des Passous and the École de voile are accessible on foot via the promenade. As access rules may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before your visit.

Information boards, picnic tables and shaded areas are available at the Mare de la commune. The eastern shore of the Mare de l’Essay offers a different focus: it is wild and rich in species, and many bird species can be observed there. This means that, alongside the beach areas, nature watching and a well-equipped place to relax are also options for your visit.

Maritime history and local culture

The church of Saint-Evroult in Agon has a white bell tower that once served as a landmark for sailors. Near the church, the Agon sundial is engraved on five sides of a cube made of Montmartin stone. Both features are in the vicinity of the church, but each has a different emphasis: the bell tower reflects the history of the town, while the sundial stands out for its unusual form and material.

The La Poulette beach hut is also part of the town’s history and has stood in Agon-Coutainville since 1926. The Phare de la Pointe d’Agon was inaugurated in 1856 on the site of a former fort.

The seasonal Petit musée du littoral et de la mer displays equipment and regulations relating to mudflat fishing, as well as models and games. In summer, the museum offers outings to gather Venus clams. Check the current annual schedule if you plan to take part in this activity.

Land sailing, trimaran sailing and golf

The Club Nautique de Coutainville offers land sailing on the sandy beaches of Agon-Coutainville. The club also runs supervised trimaran trips to explore the coast. The activities differ: land sailing takes place on the beaches, while the trimaran trips explore the coast from the water. Dates and booking options may vary by season.

The Golf de Coutainville has an 18-hole course measuring 4,924 metres. Since 1925, this seaside links course has combined landscapes of the Bocage. Alongside activities on the water, it offers a different experience: a golf course with a specific length and number of holes, as well as a longstanding connection to the landscape.

Getting there in summer

In summer, Agon-Coutainville can be reached by the “Coutances-les plages” bus route operated by Nomad, a transport service in the Normandy region. The bus service is seasonal; check the timetable for your travel dates. You can plan your journey around the season, while seasonal museum outings and club activities each require separate checks for dates.
