A history of flax, a 16th-century half-timbered manor house and a one-hour walking tour offer different ways to explore Routot’s local history. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between the subject of flax, the historic buildings and a self-guided discovery tour. The options also differ in how they can be visited: the tour is designed to take one hour, while certain visits to the Maison du Lin are subject to group or enquiry requirements.

Routot and the Roumois countryside

Routot is in the Pays du Roumois and belongs to the Boucles de la Seine Normande Regional Natural Park (Parc naturel régional des Boucles de la Seine Normande). Ponds, hedgerows and orchards shape the traditional cultural landscape of the Roumois. This regional setting adds to the picture of local history: alongside individual buildings, flax is a central theme that can be traced from cultivation through processing to craft and industrial applications.

Flax at the Maison du Lin

The Maison du Lin presents the history of flax in several stages, from cultivation through processing to craft and industrial applications. This makes a visit a thematic complement to the local history and offers a different focus from Routot’s buildings and walking tour. Guided tours are available for groups of more than ten people by prior reservation. An industrial tour is available on request and for a fee. If you are planning a visit, check the applicable conditions in advance.

The guided group tour and the industrial tour therefore have different requirements. The industrial tour of Terre de Lin can be combined with a visit to the Maison du Lin. The museum area of the Maison du Lin presents the history of flax. This allows you to explore the subject through both its historical development and its craft and industrial applications, without treating the two types of visit as the same.

A walking tour of Routot and its historic buildings

“Routot au fil du temps” is a one-hour, self-guided discovery tour of Routot. It starts at Place du General Leclerc. This gives it a clearly defined duration and makes it a different way to visit from a guided group tour at the Maison du Lin. Check the current access conditions for the tour before setting out.

Among Routot’s historic buildings is the Manoir de Prémare, a 16th-century half-timbered manor house. It has been listed as a historic monument since 3 February 1928. At Église Saint-Ouen de Routot, by contrast, the protected status applies only in part to the bell tower: it has been partially classified as a historic monument since 8 January 1910. The market hall is also part of the town’s history. It bears witness to the importance of the Routot market, which was considered the third most important market in France in the 18th century.

These highlights are easy to distinguish when planning your stay: the Maison du Lin focuses on flax, the walking tour is a self-guided option with a stated duration, and the manor house, bell tower and market hall each reveal different aspects of historic Routot. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Routot, you can decide whether to focus your visit on flax, the historic buildings or the one-hour walking tour.
