An unfinished church, a museum with art, archaeology and natural science collections, and a walking trail with around fifteen information panels give Pont-Audemer a distinct cultural focus. There is also a seasonal kayaking activity that presents the town’s heritage from the water, a walking area that spans municipal boundaries, and a local pastry speciality. For your trip planning, this means you can explore cultural history in different ways and add nature or regional cuisine as further highlights.

Architecture and building history

The Église Saint-Ouen was left unfinished and is considered an important monument of Norman Flamboyant architecture. Its unfinished state and its specific stylistic classification are two distinct aspects of the church. Its organ is also part of the building’s history: it probably dates from the Renaissance and was fully restored between 1996 and 2000. The dates should therefore be distinguished: its Renaissance origins are considered probable, while the restoration period is clearly specified. Architecture enthusiasts will find not only a classification of the church building here, but also a history of the instrument in its own right.

Musée Alfred Canel: collections and exhibitions

The Musée Alfred Canel is a literary museum and, since 17 September 2003, has been a Musée de France under French heritage law. Its Gallery of Arts and Sciences displays collections of fine art, local archaeology, natural sciences and industry. The range thus extends from works of art to natural science and industrial topics, while the local archaeology also establishes a clear link with the surrounding area.

In addition, the contemporary section alternates between exhibitions on historical and cultural heritage topics and works by contemporary artists. The collection areas are therefore complemented by a changing exhibition programme. If a particular exhibition is important to your travel plans, check the current programme in advance, as individual exhibitions change.

The town and its heritage from the water

The “Deux ponts… Plus loin” walking trail takes visitors through the town of Pont-Audemer with a guidebook and around fifteen information panels. Its format presents the town’s heritage along a route rather than concentrating it in a single location. The guidebook and panels also help visitors find their way. If you would rather explore history in the town itself than through a collection, the trail offers a different approach.

The “Parcours kayak à Pont-Audemer” presents history and heritage from the water, using a geolocated audio system and audio scenes. Unlike the walking trail through the town, this activity focuses on interpretation during the kayaking experience. Seasonal availability may vary, so check before making the route a fixed part of your trip.

Walks and a local speciality

The Site des étangs is an ecologically managed sensitive natural area designed for walks. It extends across Pont-Audemer, Toutainville and Saint-Germain-Village. This walking area, which spans several municipalities, complements the town’s cultural offerings with another way to spend time outdoors.

The Mirliton is also part of the local selection: it is a speciality made by Pont-Audemer’s pastry shops. This baked sponge roll is filled with praline cream and sealed at both ends with a small piece of chocolate. Its specific ingredients make it a distinctive culinary highlight alongside architecture, collections and walks.
