Montaure offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: church history, a protected monument, the Château’s gardens and a circular route through the forest. There is also an educational farm offering guided visits. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on cultural history, garden design, a guided visit or a longer route. These themes involve different types of visits and are best treated as separate activities.
Church, Cross and Priory
Notre-Dame Parish Church was built in the 11th century. The monumental cross in Montaure’s church square was listed as a historic monument by decree on 3 December 1954. These two details represent different historical aspects: for the church, the date of construction is key; for the cross, it is the protected status and the date it was listed.
Another point of interest is Montaure’s former priory, which was transferred to the Abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen in 1063. This date refers to the transfer of the priory, not the construction of the church. Sacred architecture, heritage protection and the priory’s medieval history thus offer distinct perspectives on Montaure’s heritage.
Park and Visitor Offerings
The Château de Montaure has an eight-hectare romantic park. Its regularly laid-out terraces in the Italian style give the grounds a distinctive garden-design feature. The area figure describes the park’s size, while the terraces reflect a particular style. When exploring this theme, you can pay attention both to the scale and to the layout of the gardens.
A self-guided walk is available as a visit option; check before travelling whether it is currently offered. The Château’s visitor offerings also include a cider museum, whose visiting arrangements may change. Check the latest information in advance if you plan to visit these attractions.
Circular Route and Guided Visit
The Circuit de la Sente aux Moines is a separate option for anyone wishing to include a longer route in their trip. The circular route starts and ends at the Sente aux Moines forest house in Montaure, in the municipality of Terres-de-Bord. It is 30.15 kilometres long and passes through the Forêt de Bords-Louviers. While the park foregrounds garden design and grounds, the route is defined by its distance and its starting and ending points. At this length, it should be treated as a standalone route, not as a short stop between other visits. As trail conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.
The Au Bon Eure de la nature educational farm in Montaure offers guided visits. This is a different type of visit from the self-guided walk available in the park: the farm visit includes a guide, while the park offers a walk without a guide. If you plan to do both, allow for the different formats separately.
