If you would like to explore La Lande-Saint-Léger on foot, you can choose from three hikes of varying lengths, walking times and landscapes. Two routes are rated easy and the third moderate. In addition to the time available, the terrain, scenery and historic stops provide practical points of comparison.
Three hikes with different profiles
The Chemin des Quatre Paroisses is an easy 5.3-kilometre hiking trail, with a walking time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts at 10 Chemin de l’Eglise in La Lande-Saint-Léger. 62 percent of the route runs along unpaved paths, and the route is marked in yellow. Along the way, it passes the ruins of the Church of Saint-Léger.
At 11 kilometres and about three hours, the Chemin de l’Ancien Village is the longest hike; it is rated moderate. The route passes springs and sunken lanes and offers views of the Pays d’Auge bocage landscape, alternating with agricultural plains. A sunken lane is cut into the terrain; bocage refers to a landscape divided by hedges and field boundaries.
The Tour historique de la Lande Saint-Léger is an easy 5.95-kilometre hike, takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and is a circular route that returns to its starting point. Its seven stages give the route a historical structure.
The two easy hikes take similar amounts of time: the Chemin des Quatre Paroisses takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, while the Tour historique takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes. At around three hours, the moderate Chemin de l’Ancien Village takes roughly twice as long to walk as the shorter Chemin des Quatre Paroisses. The stated walking times apply to the hikes themselves; allow additional time in your schedule for breaks or longer stops.
Church and local history
The parish church of Saint-Pierre incorporates building phases dating from the 12th to the 19th century. The choir and nave date from the 12th century, and the bell tower from the 14th century. The choir windows were altered in the 16th century; restoration work took place in the 18th century, and a restoration inscription bears the date 1763. The sacristy dates from the 19th century. The choir is the liturgical area around the altar, while the nave is the main body of the church. These terms help identify the dates associated with each part of the building.
A local historical account places a fortified castle at the site of today’s village as early as the 12th century, or earlier. It was destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War; afterwards, a manor house was rebuilt on the same site. The castle and manor house thus represent different types of buildings from successive periods in the village’s history.
