The Church of Saint-Sulpice and two routes starting in La Goulafrière give the town three different points of interest for planning a trip: sacred history, walking and cycling. Which one takes centre stage affects the time available and how you plan your day. If you are travelling by motorhome, you can also include the Aire de camping-car de la Goule in your plans for a place to park.

Church of Saint-Sulpice: History and Art

The Church of Saint-Sulpice was built before 1050. The Giroie family transferred it to Saint-Evroult Abbey. The town’s history therefore includes both a very early origin and a specific connection to an abbey. If you are interested in historic religious buildings, you can consider these as two distinct aspects: the date points to the age of the church, while the transfer relates to its institutional history at the time.

Its more recent history is also marked by specific events. Several church windows were broken during the fighting in August 1944; the nave was rebuilt after 1946. The time gap separates the damage to the windows from the later work on the nave, revealing two different stages in the building’s history.

Saint-Sulpice is also home to a 17th-century painting and frame depicting the Annunciation. Since 2 April 1996, the painting and frame have been classified as a protected object. Several periods of history thus come together in one place: the church’s early history, the damage and rebuilding in the 20th century, and a 17th-century artwork with a precisely dated protected status.

Walking and Cycling

The “Circuit de la Grande Vallée” is a moderately difficult walking route marked with yellow waymarkers. It is 11 km long and takes around three hours. The route starts in La Goulafrière; parking is available at the town hall. Check local conditions and parking rules before setting off. The approximate duration gives you a guide for planning your day; allow extra time for breaks and meals.

The “La Goulafrière charentonne” cycling route starts in La Goulafrière on Route d’Orbec. A user-submitted route description, last updated in August 2024, gives its length as 30.1 km and its difficulty as moderate. This gives you two different planning figures: for the Circuit, you can allow around three hours as an approximate route time; for the cycling trip, factor the distance into your own schedule. Do not apply the walking time to the cycling route; base your time allowance on your riding style and the conditions.

Motorhome Stopover

The Aire de camping-car de la Goule has six motorhome pitches at 680 route d’Orbec in La Goulafrière. The exact address helps you plan your arrival. If you are relying on one of these pitches, check availability before travelling.
