Construction of the Château de Gisors began in 1097 with an imposing motte surrounded by ditches. The castle is a striking starting point for discovering the town’s medieval border history. Other attractions include the Léproserie Saint-Luc, a work of art inside the historic building, and two parks with very different character.

Château de Gisors and the Border in the Epte Valley

The Château de Gisors was a border fortress and the eastern defensive stronghold of Normandy in the Epte Valley. This valley formed a natural border between the two kingdoms. The castle’s historic setting therefore includes not only the motte and its ditches: its role in the defense of Normandy is also closely connected to the valley landscape. Those interested in medieval history will find both tangible architectural history and a clear regional context here.

Guided tours of the Château include the Tour du Prisonnier, the motte and the Tour Saint Thomas. The motte is therefore both part of the architectural history and one of the features included in the tour. Check current availability of guided tours before your trip.

The Léproserie Saint-Luc: History and Art

Another historic site in Gisors is the Léproserie Saint-Luc. Jean de Gisors founded it in 1210 outside the town to protect residents from the risk of infection. The date of its founding, the founder’s name, its location outside the town and its purpose at the time are all connected, providing a specific historical context for the site. Inside is the monumental work “Jugement Dernier” by the artist Dado. Dado is the artist’s name of Miodrag Djuric. Interest in Saint-Luc therefore encompasses both the institution’s medieval history and a work of modern art.

Green Spaces: Pond, Exercise and Avenues

The Parc environnemental Frédéric Passy has a different focus. It features an ecologically managed pond with diverse wildlife. Those interested in nature and wildlife will find a contrast here to the history of the castle and the leprosarium. The park also has an outdoor fitness trail, open to everyone. The pond and trail offer different ways to enjoy the grounds: one draws attention to the wildlife, while the other provides an opportunity for exercise.

The Parc du Château de Gisors is defined by shady historic avenues. They are lined with beech, elm, lime, chestnut and plane trees. These tree species give the avenues a different character from the ecologically managed pond in the Parc environnemental Frédéric Passy. Visitors can therefore choose between focusing on the pond and wildlife or strolling along historic avenues lined with a variety of trees.

Another Cultural Attraction

The Église Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais can also be visited year-round. Check current visiting arrangements before your trip. Together with the castle and Saint-Luc, the church adds to Gisors’s historic and cultural attractions. When planning, you can choose whether to focus on guided tours of the Château, the history and artwork of Saint-Luc, or the church. The parks add a distinct focus on nature and exercise.
