Gisay-La-Coudre offers several cultural and historical perspectives to consider when planning a trip: the architectural history of the Church of Saint-Ouen-de-Mancelles, archaeological finds from different periods, and local traditions surrounding the Cloître de Gisay. There are also events held on fixed dates each year, as well as regular concerts. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose between focusing on history and traveling for a specific event date.

The Church of Saint-Ouen-de-Mancelles

The Church of Saint-Ouen-de-Mancelles was listed as a Monument historique in 1962. Its original chapel was built as early as the 11th century and now forms the choir. In front of the sanctuary are a proper rood screen with two altars and an unusual statue, described as a masterpiece of folk art. The two dates refer to different aspects: the 11th century dates the chapel, while 1962 marks the church’s listing as a Monument historique. This distinction helps separate the building’s history from its later listing.

Archaeological traces

The excavations also tell a story spanning several periods. In 1975, excavations in Gisay-La-Coudre uncovered 76 Merovingian burials lying above Gallo-Roman remains. The excavations also brought to light a hoard of 635 bronze coins from the 3rd century. Three rooms used for heating, part of a comparatively elaborate villa, were also uncovered; the remains were later covered over again. The sequence spans from the 3rd-century coin hoard to the original 11th-century chapel and the church’s listing in 1962.

The Cloître de Gisay and the hazel trees

The Cloître de Gisay offers a different perspective. The small 16th-century enclosure surrounds centuries-old hazel trees. Local traditions link the Cloître to pilgrimages and healings attributed to the hazel trees’ effects. The distinction between the architectural feature and the local tradition gives the site a different cultural and historical perspective from the church and the excavations.

Events and when to visit

The Gisay-La-Coudre donkey race takes place every year on August 15. The weekend around the race includes a flea market, a fair, a meal and fireworks. Check the current program before your trip. A fishing competition is held every year on May 1 at the pond near the entrance to the town. The two dates have different focuses: the donkey race takes center stage in August, while the fishing competition is the main event in May. Concerts by the Opéra de Rouen orchestra or choirs from the surrounding area are held regularly in the Church of Saint-Taurin or Saint-Aubin. If a concert is a deciding factor for you, check in advance whether a date falls during your trip.

Accommodation and planning

When planning accommodation, it helps to distinguish between a specific event and a themed stay: for a festival, the event date is central; for the church’s architecture, archaeological finds and local traditions, you can choose when to travel based more on your interests. Check concert dates separately. A parking area for motorhomes has been set up near a pond at the entrance to the town. Check that it is currently available before setting out.
