Gasny offers a variety of ways to explore the area: the “Les Vaux du Milon” circular hike, the “Les Vaux du Mesnil” hiking and discovery trail, and the architectural history of the church and Benedictine priory. The trails follow different routes, while the historic buildings tell stories from different periods. You can start by deciding whether a circular hike, the route through the Epte Valley, or local history will shape your stay.

Hiking: a circular route or a trail in the Epte Valley

The “Les Vaux du Milon” circular hike starts and ends in Gasny and is 16.50 kilometers long. It passes through the Vexin bossu, between dry valleys and wetlands, and offers numerous viewpoints. Its length gives you a clear measure of how much hiking to include in your trip. The changing landscape also shapes the character of the route: it links dry valley areas and wetlands with viewpoints along the way.

The “Les Vaux du Mesnil” hiking and discovery trail follows a different kind of route: it runs between Gasny and several towns in the Epte Valley. This makes it easy to distinguish the trails by their geographic layout. “Les Vaux du Milon” is a circular hike that returns to Gasny; “Les Vaux du Mesnil” is a trail between several towns. When planning, you can choose between a loop and a route that takes in the Epte Valley and other places.

Saint-Martin: construction phases and furnishings

Saint-Martin Church in Gasny is built of limestone. Its architectural history spans several periods: the transept and choir date from the 16th century and stand on 13th-century remains. The nave was rebuilt in 1898 by Henri Jacquelin and has rib vaults. The church thus brings together older remains, parts dating from the 16th century, and a late-19th-century rebuilding. These dates reflect more than a single construction period.

The main altar ensemble adds another layer to this chronology. The altarpiece and tabernacle date from the second half of the 17th century; the altar dates from the first quarter of the 19th century. The furnishings therefore have their own dates, distinct from the church’s construction phases. If you are interested in historical development, Saint-Martin offers two related but distinct perspectives: the development of its architectural elements and the differently dated composition of the main altar ensemble.

Saint-Nicaise: an early foundation and later work

The Benedictine Priory of Saint-Nicaise in Gasny was founded around 680 by Saint Ouen, who was then Bishop of Rouen. This early foundation sets it apart chronologically from the dated construction phases of Saint-Martin Church. The priory’s later history has its own milestones: the municipality purchased it in 1988, and most of it was renovated and restored from 1991 onward. Its foundation, purchase, and restoration therefore belong to different periods in the priory’s history.

Together, the two buildings tell different stories about Gasny: at Saint-Martin, individual architectural elements and furnishings can be placed in their historical context; at Saint-Nicaise, the early foundation and later work on the priory come to the fore. Along with the hiking trails’ different routes, this gives you a choice between landscape and local history, without combining the two into a single route.
