Fleury Sur Andelle brings together riverside scenery and local history. The Andelle, a twelve-kilometre hiking route, the weekly market, and traces of former milling and textile production offer different ways to explore during a stay. Other highlights include the Church of Notre-Dame de la Vallée and the Menhir Pierre Saint-Martin, with its local lore. When planning your visit, you can choose what to focus on: walks by the water, a longer hike, or the town’s cultural history.

Walking and hiking along the Andelle

The Andelle flows through a large part of Fleury Sur Andelle. You can enjoy a peaceful walk along the river. A hiking route starts at Chemin de la Ferme des Vaux; it is twelve kilometres long and loops around Fleury Sur Andelle, Vandrimare, and Charleval. The walk and the hike offer different experiences: the riverside is the focus of the walk, while the route has a specified length and course.

Market, church, and local lore

The town market has been held every Tuesday at Place de la Mairie since 1843. Visitors can discover local products there. The Church of Notre-Dame de la Vallée was built in 1844. Its bell tower is Neo-Gothic in style and visible from several kilometres away. The church thus combines a precise construction date with a prominent landmark.

The Menhir Pierre Saint-Martin tells a different story of local history. It stands on private property east of the town, on the edge of Bois Cornu. According to local lore, until the 19th century, newlyweds placed coins in the menhir’s rock crevices on their wedding day to secure future good fortune. This account refers to a historical practice, not a present-day custom. Its location on private property is also part of the context for the menhir.

Mills, textile production, and railway history

Several historic industrial sites are linked to the Andelle and its waterways. The Minoterie Moulin de Fleury stands beside the bras du Héron, a navigable canal branching off from the Andelle. The site’s history dates back to a flour mill founded in 1805 by the farmer Charles Lamotte of Charleval.

Les Jumelles was a four-storey cotton spinning mill built above a canal branching off from the Andelle. Two undershot waterwheels were powered by a 1.30-metre drop. The uses of the Saint-Victor site changed over time: it successively served as a cotton spinning mill, a cotton spinning and weaving mill, and the Ondulys cardboard factory. Taken together, these examples show different aspects of local industrial history: mills, the use of water power, and changing textile and cardboard production.

Gare de Fleury-sur-Andelle station is also part of this history. It was built in 1866 by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Pont-de-l'Arche Ă  Gisors. Passenger services ended on 9 April 1956; today, the building is used as a residence and is no longer a passenger railway station.
