Évreux offers several ways to explore culture and city history: architectural styles at the cathedral, collections at the Musée d’Art, Histoire et Archéologie, medieval connections at the Beffroi and Saint-Taurin Church, and a walking path along the Iton. There is also the Jardin botanique and its tropical plant life. During your stay, you can choose between architecture, art, botany and a walk by the river as different areas of focus.

Cathedral and museum: two ways to explore art

Notre-Dame Cathedral showcases major architectural styles from the Romanesque period to the Renaissance. Its stained-glass windows date from the 13th to the 16th century. The building’s design and windows therefore offer different perspectives on its long artistic history: the architecture spans a broad period, while the dates of the windows provide another point of reference.

The Musée d’Art, Histoire et Archéologie d’Évreux covers a range of subjects, from archaeology to fine and decorative arts, as well as ethnology and contemporary art. The museum is housed in a former bishop’s palace, which is classified as a historic monument. Visitors wishing to focus their visit on particular interests will find several collections under one roof; at the same time, the building’s former function is part of the site’s history.

During school holidays, the museum offers children’s workshops on Wednesdays, by advance reservation: from 10 to 11 a.m. for children aged 4 to 6, and from 2:30 to 4 p.m. for children aged 7 to 12. As dates may change, check the current holiday schedule before planning your visit. The age groups and times differ, and advance reservation is required.

Medieval connections and church architecture

The Beffroi, also known as the Tour de l’Horloge, is a 15th-century tower and the only surviving remnant of Évreux’s medieval fortifications. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1962. It is associated with the municipal freedoms gained in the Middle Ages. These aspects give the tower a distinctive place in the city’s history: it is a surviving architectural remnant, a dated structure and a landmark of the city’s municipal past.

Saint-Taurin Church combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles. It was once part of an abbey founded in the 10th century in honour of the first bishop and evangeliser of Évreux. The church that bears his name also houses the Châsse de Saint-Taurin, a medieval goldsmith’s work dating from the 13th century. Saint-Taurin thus brings together architectural history, the former abbey and a specific example of goldsmithing.

Botany and a walk along the Iton

The Jardin botanique d’Évreux offers a different focus. It includes a large area rich in trees and flowers, pools, sculptures and a playground. One special feature is the Serre tropicale: its metal-and-glass structure displays a selection of plant life from tropical regions around the world. The garden thus provides a botanical counterpoint to the city’s buildings and collections.

A landscaped urban walking path runs along the Iton River, with views of former washhouses. The path connects the river with a part of everyday life in the past, without requiring a focus on a museum. If you would like to walk from the train station to the Cité Épiscopale, it takes about ten minutes. This is an estimate, not an exact travel time.

The attractions can be easily distinguished when choosing what to focus on: the cathedral, Beffroi and Saint-Taurin lead to architectural styles and city history; the museum brings together various fields of art and knowledge; and the garden and Iton offer botanical and riverside highlights. You can therefore plan your stay according to whether you are most interested in architecture, collections or a walk.
