Douville-sur-Andelle’s architectural and industrial history can be discovered through specific details: preserved building elements, different architectural styles and traces of former production. Meadows along the Andelle and a walking trail offer further perspectives on the village and its heritage. You can focus on architecture, industrial history or the landscape.

Architectural history and distinctive features

The former Notre-Dame parish church in Douville-sur-Andelle retains a south portal, windows at the end of the choir and fragments of a cornice dating from the 12th century. It was altered in the 18th century and converted into a barn during the Revolution. Older building elements and later phases of use thus represent different chapters in its history.

The Chapelle de l’Essart displays different architectural features: red brick surrounds on the openings, pointed-arch openings and a central oculus. An oculus is a round window. There is also a polygonal roof turret made of slate and wood. The different forms and materials offer specific points to look for if you are interested in details of local architectural history.

The local dovecote can also be identified by its construction. It is cylindrical, with a dry-stone façade featuring dressed-stone detailing. The roof is covered with small, flat tiles. Here, the focus is on form, masonry and roofing material—a different perspective from the ecclesiastical architectural features of the Chapelle de l’Essart.

The Église de l’Assomption has stained-glass windows and sculptures that can be seen when the doors are open. If these interior features are of particular interest to you, take the condition of the doors being open into account when planning your visit.

Traces of industrial history

The former workers’ housing estate is associated with the Filature Levavasseur and documents the industrial development of the Andelle Valley in the 19th century. Alongside the churches and other religious buildings, the history of work and industry thus becomes a distinct theme for exploring Douville-sur-Andelle.

A vertical breastshot waterwheel was installed at the Chapitre mill site in 1847. Until the Second World War, it powered the woodworking workshop of the Euréka toy factory, founded by M. Kratz. The waterwheel is currently in poor condition. Its history connects a specific mechanical drive to the woodworking workshop and toy production, while the workers’ housing estate shows the development of the Andelle Valley in a broader historical context.

Meadows, views and walking trail

North of Douville-sur-Andelle, the meadows along the Andelle and the Grande Aulnaie offer direct views of the Filature Levavasseur. Here, the focus is on the connection between landscape and industrial heritage. Douville-sur-Andelle also lies within the continental ZNIEFF Type 2 area La ForĂŞt de Longboel, le Bois des Essarts.

The Bois de Bonnemare walking trail starts in Radepont, passes through Douville-sur-Andelle and offers panoramic views of the village, its natural areas and its heritage. The information about the starting point and route helps you consider the trail as a way to explore, without assuming a walking time or distance. Its panoramic views take in the village, natural areas and heritage; by contrast, the meadows to the north draw the eye directly to the Filature Levavasseur. The views described therefore differ in their focus.

To choose what to focus on during your visit, you can distinguish clearly between the themes: architectural forms shape the view of churches and the dovecote; the workers’ housing estate and waterwheel lead to industrial history; and the meadows and walking trail offer different landscape and panoramic perspectives. If interiors are important to you, keep in mind that the stained-glass windows and sculptures in the Église de l’Assomption are visible only when the doors are open.
