Get to know Conches-En-Ouche through its medieval heritage, regional culture, and an arboretum with a wide botanical range. Hiking and cycling options are also described with specific route distances. Visitors choosing the town as a destination can explore different interests: architecture and collections on the one hand, the diversity of trees and apples and exercise on named routes on the other.

The Keep, Half-Timbered Houses and Church Architecture

The keep of Conches was built in the late 11th century by Roger III de Tosny, lord of Conches. Around 1417, its defensive strength was enhanced under the Captal de Buch. Here, then, we find two distinct phases: the construction of the keep and its later military reinforcement. The architectural heritage also includes 15th-century half-timbered houses and the Église Sainte-Foy, a church in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The Porte Sainte-Foy is a surviving gate of Conches-En-Ouche; the former abbey is also part of the town’s historic heritage. Together, these sites showcase a range of architectural features: a defensive structure, half-timbering, a distinctive form of Gothic architecture, and a surviving town gate.

Museums and Cultural Themes

The Musée du Rouloir presents old tools and collections of Norman arts and traditions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collections cover topics such as domestic life, social and religious life, artisanal and industrial activities, and traditional Norman dress. The museum thus combines the history of everyday life and craftsmanship with regional traditions. The Musée du Verre François Décorchemont is housed in a former 19th-century hospice. The Maison des Arts, built in 1721, offers a different cultural focus: visual art and photography exhibitions have been held there occasionally since the 1970s. The buildings thus differ both in their architectural history and in the subjects of their collections and exhibitions.

Tree Species and Apple Varieties in the Arboretum

The Arboretum de Conches includes 122 tree species from Europe, Asia, and America. This geographic range makes the diversity of tree species a subject in its own right for exploring the site. There is also a collection of around 100 apple varieties, including dessert and cider apples. Two different ways of classification are represented here: the trees are grouped by their origins across different continents, while the apples are grouped by variety and their different uses. Plant enthusiasts can therefore explore the diversity of trees as well as learn about the different uses of apples.

Planning Hiking and Cycling

The routes can also be distinguished by activity, starting point, and distance. Sur la route de Compostelle is a yellow-marked loop for hiking and mountain biking that starts and ends in Conches-En-Ouche. Its distance on foot is given as 14 kilometers. La Vél'Iton, by contrast, is a 29.01-kilometer cycling stage from Évreux to Conches-En-Ouche. For both routes, it is worth checking the trail conditions before setting out.

Another option is the local outing organized by the VTT CONCHOIS club: it takes place on Sunday mornings, starting at 8:30 a.m. from Place des Promenades, and covers 30 to 50 kilometers. Check the meeting time and participation details before your trip. The 14-kilometer walking route, the 29.01-kilometer cycling stage, and the club outing’s distance range provide different ways to plan: on foot, on a stage between two towns, or on a local outing.
