In Breteuil, Romanesque architectural remains, a 16th-century organ and traces of the medieval fortifications sit alongside ponds and wetlands. There is also a museum with more than 7,000 old tools and folk-art objects, as well as activities involving games and puzzles. You can plan your visit around cultural history, nature watching or an activity for children.

Church, Fortifications and Crafts

The Church of Saint-Sulpice preserves Romanesque architectural remains built from locally sourced Grison stone. It also houses a restored 16th-century organ with two keyboards and sixteen stops. The church is protected as a historic monument and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.

The Tour Carrée is a remnant of Breteuil’s former 12th-century fortifications. The town hall dates from a later period: it was built in 1840, modelled on the former Hôtel-Dieu. These buildings thus highlight two different chapters in the town’s history.

The Musée Vie et Métiers d'Autrefois focuses on tools, folk art and trades. During a guided tour, the museum presents more than 38 trades from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Children can use age-appropriate activity booklets for the 3–6, 7–11 and 12–16 age groups. An escape-game-style puzzle trail is available by prior reservation.

Ponds and Trails

The Étangs de Breteuil are open to the public, with paths leading around the ponds. They provide habitats for numerous birds, amphibians and insects, making them suitable for observing this wildlife. Check the current access conditions before your visit. The banks of a seven-hectare pond in Breteuil’s public garden are designated as a Natura 2000 site and an Espace Naturel Sensible.

Within the town of Breteuil, the Sentier du Héron takes in a pond and a wetland. Walkers, people exercising and anglers use the area; QR codes provide information about local wildlife and plant life. A 2.5-kilometre nature trail starts at Place Pillon de Buhorel and passes through the public garden, by the medieval motte, the Pré des 7 Canaux and Breteuil fishing pond.

For a longer route, take an 18-kilometre stage of the GRP d'Avre et d'Iton from Breteuil-sur-Iton to Damville. It starts beside the HĂ´tel Pillon de Buhorel. Check the route markers and trail conditions before setting out. The nature trail and this stage offer different distances for planning your trip.
