Discover Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger through its local history and landscape: former parishes, buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Dives River each offer a different perspective. A hiking route from Troarn to Mézidon Vallée d’Auge also passes through the area. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your stay around the historic sites, architecture and landscape.

History of the Three Former Parishes

Before the French Revolution, Saint-Ouen, Héritot and Hernetot were independent parishes. Hernetot was incorporated into Saint-Ouen after its church was severely damaged by a fire in 1790. Héritot was incorporated into Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger in 1833. These were two distinct events: the fire damage is cited as the reason for Hernetot’s incorporation, while Héritot’s incorporation was a separate step in 1833.

Buildings from Two Centuries

The list of heritage features for Val ès Dunes, dated 5 June 2025, includes several buildings. Notre-Dame d’Héritot is an 18th-century religious building in the hamlet of Héritot. Château d’Héritot is an 18th-century château or manor house in the same hamlet. The manor house and farm complex at 25 Champ Delaunay is a 17th-century château or manor house complex and is also included in the list.

These examples differ both in date and in type: a religious building is joined by châteaux and manor houses, as well as a complex with a farm. Visitors interested in architecture can compare the building styles and the centuries mentioned. The Manoir de Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger is a prominent group of buildings opposite the town hall and is described as the residence of a Sieur de Saint-Côme.

Blocked round-arched openings are still visible at Saint-Ouen Church and are interpreted as evidence of a Romanesque building phase. Saint-Ouen Church is accessible only via a farm track; check before your visit whether this access arrangement is still in place.

The washhouse on Voie de Cléville is part of Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger’s small-scale built heritage. As a washhouse, it represents a functional type of built heritage alongside churches and manor houses.

River Landscapes and Walking Routes

Near Hernetot, the Dives River divides the area into two almost equal parts. The 2012 municipal plan highlights wooded paths as a landscape asset and proposes a network of routes to promote nature tourism and walking. This is distinct from the walking route from Troarn to Mézidon Vallée d’Auge, which passes through Saint-Ouen-Du-Mesnil-Oger. These operate at different scales for planning purposes: the plan sets out an objective for a network of routes, while the named route follows a specific course. As route details can change, check the current route before setting off.
