The Laize forms the western boundary of Fontaine-Le-Pin; the Church of Saint-Pierre preserves a complete decorative ensemble by Yvonne Guégan. Together with its location between the Caen Plain and Suisse Normande, the river landscape and art history shape the character of the destination.

The Laize Valley and Natural Environment

To the west, the Laize Valley and several side valleys cut into the plateau, giving the landscape a distinctly varied relief. Fontaine-Le-Pin is home to the ZNIEFF natural area “La Laize et ses affluents” (La Laize and its tributaries), a type 1 site numbered 0082-0005. The natural areas in Fontaine-Le-Pin are distinguished by the quality of their natural habitats and the variety of wildlife found there. The river, side valleys and habitats thus form a distinctive focus alongside the cultural sites.

A Riding Trail Through the Village Centre

The “Circuit des mondes souterrains” riding trail runs from Suisse Normande to the Pays de Falaise. In Fontaine-Le-Pin, it passes through the village centre and continues on to Bray-en-Cinglais. The route therefore links two scales: a direct passage through the village and a longer regional route. If you plan to ride the trail, check the current conditions before setting out.

Church Art and Architectural History

The Church of Saint-Pierre in Fontaine-Le-Pin was built in 1957 by Pierre Bienvenu and has been listed as a Monument historique since June 16, 2005. Yvonne Guégan created a complete decorative ensemble for the church. The year of construction and the date of listing record two distinct points in time: the creation of the church building and its subsequent protected status. Architecture and art history come together here in a single building. The church’s furnishings include a granite altar supported by four sculpted pillars.

The Église de Bray-en-Cinglay has major building phases dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The entire building is protected as a Monument historique under a listing order dated June 10, 2014. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. The Church of Saint-Aubin in Bray-en-Cinglais houses a 14th-century statue of the Virgin Mary and a Baroque-style altar. While the Église de Bray-en-Cinglay is notable for its building phases and the protection of the entire structure, Saint-Aubin is distinguished by two specific works of art.

Medieval History and Milling Technology

The Templar commandery of Voismer was founded in 1148 by Roger de Gouvix and is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check access arrangements in advance. The Moulin de Bray adds milling technology to the cultural history: its surviving equipment includes three pairs of millstones with their hoppers, sieves, gears and mechanisms for distributing flour. Alongside buildings and works of art, the technical components of a mill are thus a distinct subject of interest.
