The sandy beach of Wissant lies within the Grand Site de France des Deux-Caps; the town is also at the centre of a 12-kilometre-long bay. The bay is suitable for walks and sporting activities. The beach and bay therefore offer different points of reference for planning: the sandy beach provides a distinct coastal focus, while the bay describes a wider area for getting around. The dunes of Wissant are part of Natura 2000 site No. 5, code FR3100478. Together, the beach, bay and dunes offer different ways to shape your stay around coastal landscapes, activity or protected nature.
Walks for different time frames
Two routes with clearly stated distances are available to help you plan your time. The Sentier des peintres in Wissant is 3 kilometres long and takes about an hour. The Circuit du Dauphin is 3.4 kilometres long and takes about an hour and 30 minutes. In comparison, the Circuit is 400 metres longer and takes roughly half an hour more. If you have about an hour, the Sentier des peintres is the better fit; the Circuit du Dauphin is the longer option. Check local conditions before setting off and plan your walking time accordingly. The Chemin des peintres is an easy walk that leads into the town’s art history and maritime life.
Maritime heritage and local culture
The Flobart is the traditional fishing boat of the Boulonnais coast; its range extends from Équihen in the south to Wissant in the north. The Maison du Pêcheur is a small museum about the lives of local fishermen. You can view the exterior of the Maison du Pêcheur daily between 2 and 10 p.m.; explanations are available in French and English. Check visiting times before your trip. You can also discover the legend of Wilgeforte, the bearded saint, in Saint-Nicolas Church. These cultural references offer different points of focus: regional fishing traditions, the lives of local fishermen and a saint’s legend in the church.
Kitesurfing and paddleboarding
Wissant is known as a kitesurfing destination on the Côte d’Opale and is popular with French and European athletes. Visitors can go paddleboarding on Wissant beach; a board and paddle are provided there. This offers two water sports to choose from: kitesurfing, for which Wissant is known among athletes, and paddleboarding on the beach. Check in advance whether equipment will be available on the day of your visit, as arrangements may change.
