Lorgies offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: a natural area south of the Lys plain and two German bunkers with distinct construction histories. There is also a commemorative event near Bois Fréteur and the option to put together individual routes on the “Vallée de la Lys & Monts de Flandre” cycle route network. Nature, military history, remembrance and cycling each provide a different focus.

Natural landscapes south of the Lys plain

The INPN inventory dated June 12, 2024, places the ZNIEFF area 310030054 in Lorgies, south of the Lys plain. For visitors who take a designated natural area into account when choosing where to go, this provides a specific geographical reference. This landscape is a distinct theme for a stay, alongside military history.

Two bunkers, different construction methods

The German machine-gun bunker “Casemate à mitrailleuse 122” is located 800 meters from Bois du Biez. During the war, it was 1,500 meters from the front line. The two distances use different reference points: one describes its location relative to Bois du Biez, the other its distance from the front line during the war. Its T-shaped floor plan and main section, approximately ten meters long, provide further details about its construction.

The German war command bunker “Casemate de commandement 289” is part of the so-called Halpegarde VIb transit zone. The semi-underground structure measures approximately 17 × 8 meters. In comparison with bunker 122, the focus here is on its construction, approximate dimensions and inclusion in the transit zone. The details for bunker 122, by contrast, refer to its floor plan and the length of its main section. The two structures can therefore be compared by different features, without treating their dimensions as equivalent.

Machine-gun bunker 122 is decommissioned and privately owned. War command bunker 289 is also privately owned. Do not assume that either site is open to the public. If an on-site visit is essential to your trip, check access in advance.

Remembrance and cycle route planning

A local media report from June 2024 mentions an annual commemorative event in September at the memorial stele for those who were executed, near Bois Fréteur. For travelers wishing to include a commemoration in their plans, this provides a point of reference for timing. Check the specific date for your travel year in advance, as the annual schedule may change.

The “Vallée de la Lys & Monts de Flandre” cycle route network is marked with green-and-white signage. Cyclists can put together individual routes based on their preferences, physical fitness, available time, route length, villages and sights. Planning can start with either of two questions: How much time is available, and what route length would suit it? Or should particular villages and sights determine the route? Personal preferences and physical fitness can inform either approach.
