Discover Courrières through its distinctive contrasts: the Saint-Piat parish church preserves parts of a church dating from 1534, while municipal facilities offer opportunities for exercise, culture and wildlife watching. There are also green spaces and regional hiking options. This lets you take different interests into account when choosing a destination, rather than reducing the town to a single attraction.

Church and mining history

The Saint-Piat parish church preserves the surviving walls and tower of a church dating from 1534 within a new building constructed between 1961 and 1964. Its history therefore reveals not only a single year of construction, but also which older parts were retained in the new building. The mining history has a different scope: the mining concession granted in 1852 was called “concession de Courrières” and covered twelve municipalities. The building fabric and the concession area represent two different perspectives on the town’s history.

Leisure activities for a range of interests

Parc de Loisirs Léo Lagrange offers a variety of ways to exercise outdoors. Its facilities include a fitness trail and sports equipment, including a street workout area. There are also two outdoor municipal tennis courts open to everyone, a children’s playground, multisport courts and a pétanque court. Individual training, court sports and play areas are all part of what is on offer.

The educational farm welcomes families for free visits during opening hours, where they can observe the animals. The municipal equestrian centre is open year-round and offers riding lessons to anyone aged five and over; a licence is required. The communal barbecue areas in Central parc offer another option: they are available for picnics in a rural setting. These activities have different planning requirements: the farm’s opening hours are key, while riding lessons have a minimum age and require a licence.

Cultural programme and town centre

The municipal Médiathèque François Mitterrand offers a free monthly programme for everyone. It includes workshops, performances, events, creative leisure workshops and exhibitions. Films are shown at the municipal cinema, “Le Travelling”. If you are planning a visit to the cinema, check the current listings, as the selection of films changes.

The weekly market also shapes the town centre: the busy Wednesday morning market makes Rue Breton and Rue Basly the heart of the municipality of Courrières. Along with the facilities and green spaces, it gives visitors a chance to experience market life in these two streets.

Green spaces and hiking in the regional context

Parc des berges de la Souchez stretches across several neighbouring partner municipalities. Its green spaces, as well as its land and water areas, are attractive places to visit throughout the year. For walks and hikes, there is also an interactive hiking map for the Hénin-Carvin area. It lists walking routes available year-round, with a total of 285 kilometres of trails. This provides a regional reference for choosing a route; it does not describe a single trail in Courrières.

The cabin belonging to the “L’Odyssée des Cabanes” project offers another way to experience nature. From there, you can observe nature and rediscover Courrières from a different perspective. If you plan a visit to the cabin, check in advance how it can be used. This makes it possible to plan local activities, the monthly cultural programme and regional hiking trails according to different interests, without having to combine them into a fixed itinerary.
