Beuvrequen offers two specific points of interest for a stay: the Basse vallée de la Slack wetland and a local history documented in writing as early as the 11th century. It is particularly revealing that both topics are connected through water.

A wetland on a regional scale

The Basse vallée de la Slack extends across five communes: Ambleteuse, Bazinghen, Beuvrequen, Marquise and Wimille. It covers around 500 hectares, with 25 kilometres of river, 11 kilometres of ditches and 50 ponds. These figures place the landscape in a regional context: the wetland and water network extend beyond Beuvrequen. The valley is a natural floodplain and a resting place for migratory birds. This brings both the water system and the area's role along bird migration routes into focus.

The history of the name and medieval water management

The early written form of the name, Bovorkem, appears in the charters of Saint Bertin in 1043. In medieval Beuvrequen, the Abbey of Saint Bertin owned an agricultural estate known as the curtem de Boverchem. Meadows were cultivated there using irrigation. The water came from the Hondecote, known as La Slack. A carefully maintained channel carried it there; another channel drained it away. The irrigation was organised so as not to interfere with the work of the Moulin de Lohem, located downstream. The local history is thus linked to a practical use of the waterways.

Église Saint-Maxime

The Église Saint-Maxime also has a historical connection to Saint Bertin: from its earliest days, it was affiliated with and dependent on the abbey near Saint-Omer. To visit the church, you can ask for the key at Beuvrequen town hall. Include this step in your plans and check access locally before your visit.

Mountain biking, yoga and local produce

The Sentier les Royons passes through eight communes: Marquise, Beuvrequen, Wimille, Wimereux, Ambleteuse, Audresselles, Audinghen and Bazinghen. This 31.1-kilometre circular route is designated for mountain biking (VTT). It runs through the countryside around Ambleteuse and the Slack marshes. Many species of birds and amphibians live there, including bitterns, white storks and corncrakes. Opportunities to observe wildlife vary by season. If you plan to ride the route, check its course and conditions before setting out.

Yoga is another activity option: YogaTime Sxm offers classes at 163 rue de la Mairie in Beuvrequen. For local produce, Le maraicher bio du Russolin sells produce directly from the farm and offers a drive-through service for orders placed by SMS. The selection includes seasonal vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, aubergines, courgettes and melons, as well as eggs. As the selection and services may change, contact the provider in advance if needed.
