Leffrinckoucke brings together a long stretch of fine-sand beach, a coastal landscape shaped by dunes and the history of Fort des Dunes. Different interests can guide your plans: time at the beach, landscape, military history, exhibitions, performing arts or cycling. These themes offer different ways to experience the area, so you can choose according to what interests you most on your trip.

Beach and dunes on the Flanders coast

Leffrinckoucke’s beach is a long stretch of fine sand on a typical section of the Flanders coast. Its natural character and the dunes along its edge shape the coastal landscape. The beach is accessible year-round. You can go for a walk, relax with your family and enjoy outdoor activities there. A visit to the beach need not be limited to just one kind of leisure activity: walking, relaxation and outdoor exercise are all among the options described.

Another landmark in the landscape is Dune Dewulf. It lies between Leffrinckoucke and Zuydcoote and covers almost 300 hectares. This gives a different sense of scale from a single stretch of beach: when considering Leffrinckoucke’s landscape, you can take into account both the long fine-sand beach and the extensive dune area. The beach and the dunes represent different aspects of the coastal region.

Military history at Fort des Dunes

Fort des Dunes is an example of the military architecture conceived by General Séré de Rivières. It was built in 1880; in 1940, it was at the centre of Operation Dynamo. The two dates point to different historical milestones: 1880 to the construction of the fort, and 1940 to its role during Operation Dynamo. The area’s history can thus be explored both through the fort’s construction and through an event of the Second World War.

The Musérial du Fort des Dunes complements this historical focus with modern exhibitions across 600 m², a landscaped outdoor circuit and an exceptional view of the North Sea. The exhibition space, circuit and view each offer a different focus. Regular themed visitor programmes and a varied events calendar round out the offering. Exhibition content and individual events may change, so check what is currently available in advance if a particular topic or date matters to your plans.

Performing arts at ZUM

Another cultural focus is the performing arts. Since 2024, the programme in its current format has been called “ZUM: la Zone des Utopies Modernes” and has focused on performing arts in their various forms. ZUM is a renovated theatre in the former powder magazine of Fort des Dunes. Here, the history of a former part of the fort meets its cultural use as a theatre. While the fort’s construction and Operation Dynamo are central to its historical story, ZUM focuses on artistic performances. Specific programme details change; if you want to plan your visit around a performance or a particular offering, check the current programme.

Leffrinckoucke on the Vélomaritime

The Vélomaritime also offers a clear route connection for cycling travellers. The Vélomaritime, also known as EuroVelo 4, reaches Leffrinckoucke from Dunkerque and continues from there towards Bray-Dunes along a route developed as a greenway. This identifies both the connection from Dunkerque and the onward direction along the route. Check the current route before planning your ride, as local infrastructure can change. Together with the beach, dunes and cultural offerings, the route is another way to decide what you would like to focus on during your stay in Leffrinckoucke.
