In Bousignies-Sur-Roc, sacred art, memorial sites and a walking landscape of woodland, the Hante and stone features come together as distinct themes to explore. The commune is one of the eleven communes in the Natura 2000 site “Hautes vallées de la Solre, de la Thure, de la Hante et leurs versants boisés et bocagers” (FR3100512), which covers 241 hectares.

Art, Chapels and Memorial Sites

The church of Sainte-Aldegonde contains several works from different centuries. A painted wooden crucifix dating from the 15th century is classified as a protected historic object. The 18th-century high altar comprises a tabernacle, altarpiece and painting of the Crucifixion; it too is listed as a protected object. There is also a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Roch from the 17th century, likewise listed as a protected object. The dates therefore span the 15th to the 18th century and show different forms of sacred furnishings.

The altarpiece is the structure behind the altar. Together with the tabernacle and painting of the Crucifixion, it is part of the high altar and helps make its composition clear. The crucifix, altar ensemble and statue of the saint thus offer different subjects through which the church’s furnishings can be described.

The Sainte-Aldegonde oratory on Rue de Landignies is considered the oldest oratory in the arrondissement and bears the year 1681. The Notre-Dame des Bois chapel is located at Fond-de-Gouttes in the hamlet of Comagne. It stands on a slope on the right bank of the Hante; the Belgian border is only a few metres away. These details locate the chapel by reference to the hamlet, the river and its proximity to the border.

A memorial stele in Bousignies-Sur-Roc commemorates the crash of Lancaster LL839 of 626 Squadron on the night of 26 March 1944. It adds a memorial site with a specific historical date to the religious artworks and buildings.

The Hante, Woodland and Walking Trail

The petrifying spring lies on the wooded hill of Bois de Squinchaux and flows into the Hante a few hundred metres from its source. In the 19th century, there were two marble sawmills on this river: one at Petit Fayau and one at Terme du Mont. The Hante thus links two different themes in the area’s history: a natural formation and the historic working of marble.

The walking trail in Bousignies-Sur-Roc connects rural panoramas, woodland landscapes and old stone buildings or historic stone features. Its described character therefore differs from that of the sacred artworks: here, the focus is on landscape and traces in stone. This offers guidance for travellers who wish to choose between cultural history and a trail featuring rural and wooded scenery.

As of June 2026, the walking trail is indicated by orange markings. Check the local trail signs before setting out. This makes the marking colour a practical guide for this trail, without assuming it applies to other trails.
